So I am watching a Video at my Family Practice Waiting Room..

and they are commenting about hip and knee problems especially among guys in their forties and fifties.

It said that over-exercise can lead to these kind of problems.

I always thought that under-activity created joint problems, not the other way round.

Does that mean that runners will suffer in their later years?

I've had knee/leg surgery three times due to injuries suffered from my exercise-related activities, including Football, Judo and Ultimate Frisbee. There is definitely a lot of credence to that statement, but I don't think you should over-analyze it by inferring that sedetary lifestyles are better in that regard.

I am in the lower part of that age group. I used to run a lot, have always ridden a bike a lot, used to do heavy squats (four 45lb plate each side on an olympic bar) regularly. So far no knee problems unless I am NOT doing anything. Then they can get stiff and sore. Resumption of exercise helps it to go away. Keep moving. Cycling can put less stress on the joints than running though.

I'd bet the # of folks who DON'T exercise and have knee/back problems outweigh the # of high exercisers that get the same problems.

Ultimate frisbee... Haven't played that since college! Fun stuff!!
