Movie Ideas as gifts

I have 2 brothers and I hardly see them. I just really don't know what they are into. So I want to get them a movie each. I have 14 year old that is a freshman at a catholic high school and the quaterback of the foot ball team, and he plays basketball. Very popular. The other one is 7 and thinks he is a teenager. He is in 1st grade and really loves art, not popular at all. So any ideas for what movies might be good to get either one.

Thanks for any help.

The older one likes war movies....that much I know.

I'd say .... give em X-men III. Most kids would like that. Pirates of the Carribean comes out on DVD on Dec 4, so that is a good one as well.

The 7 year old probably would like something like Cars or Ice Age the Meltdown.

Does anyone think the 7 year old would like Robots?

He is getting cars from mom. I will have to see about price on the 2 for my older little brother. Thanks for those ideas.

Superman Returns may be good for either one.

well I think for the 7 year old I will go for Robots, mom says no on ICe age cause he is anal retentive and will have to watch teh first one again and they only have it on VHS and they don't have a VHS player anymore. so that would just start a fight.

As for the 14 year old, I am leaning towards Pirates right now, as I don't think he is in to the super hero movies at all. I asked my mom to play some ideas off him though and see what she can determine.

Heck in that case give 'em a Best Buy gift certificate and let them pick out their own movies.

I was hoping to get them for as cheap as possible to save money. I am perusing Deepdiscountdvd.com for the movies.

Honestly, if your 7 year old brother is THAT bad... I'd just buy him a book and call it a day.

Good thing he isn't in MY family... cause our motto is.. "Be happy we even thought enough of you to get you ANYTHING for Christmas"

Honestly, you can probably check your local flea markets or pawn shops to find a copy of Ice Age (the first movie) on the cheap. Pawn shops here sell that for around $6 or $7 used.

If you wanna be nice... then why not get him a movie like Madagascar or Hot Wheels World Race, or Ultimate Avengers (1 or 2), or a slew of other cartoon movies that have come out in the past 6 months.

Yeah, Robots would be good. Superman Returns sucked - very little action and heavy on the emotional/relationship junk. Pirates OTC II was a good movie, but is basically part one of a two-part movie.

You are smart to run the ideas through Mom. As a parent, I don't let my kids own movies without my clearance. A movie that may be acceptable to some may not be to others.

I'm sure she wasn't trying to buy the kid some pr0n or something...

Common sense goes a long way. Besides other than buying a movie that is rated higher than their age bracket... (like buyin' a Rated "R" movie for a sub-teen), what types of "common" movies don't you allow your kids to see?

(Now granted, I'm sure that most folks aren't gonna give kids movies that are filled with "toilet humor" and whatnot as most of those get a "R" rating anyways...)

Some parents do keep a close watch on the movies that their kids watch. For example, I know quite a few parents that didn't/don't want their kids watching the Harry Potter movies. For another example, I know some that weren't too thrilled about "ET", because it portrayed all the adults as the "bad guys" that the kids had to overcome. The MPAA rating on a movie doesn't always mean that it portrays moral values that all will agree with.

What about theater tickets? Our local theaters run some decent specials on gift-card like vouchers for movies, etc.

Sure you can't see the brand spankin' new movies right away, but you can see them eventually...

That would be great but with their schedules I have no idea when to call my brother on his cell, and not have a group of fellow basketball players around him and as for the 7 year old there is no home phone and I never get to see my brothers. I only get to see my mom like once a month and they live 15 min away. I am not sure what I plan to do for the 14 year old, but I am getting robots for the 7 year old.

and as for running movies by my mom, it is not really needed cause I am wayyyyyy more strict than she is. She lets her kids watch anything. Both of them can watch R movies, with nothing more than violence and sex in them. I more or less just make sure they don't have them yet.

Lot's of them. Most movies in the video store will never make it into our home. Here are some examples off the top of my head (movies "most parents" would allow their kids to see):

Any Austin Powers movie (pervasive drug and sex references)
Charlie's Angels (90 minutes of double entendres and suggestive clothing)
Nutty Professor (Lots of sex, vulger and obscene language)
Pleasantville (The moral of the story: Extra-marital sex and a thorough knowledge of evil makes life better.)
Titanic (Pre-marital sex is not only ok, but beautiful! I can't believe how many parents let their pre-teen kids watch this...)

...And pretty much any movie that treats pre-marital and extra-marital sex as normal, acceptable or desireable. We also limit movies with excessive violence (outside of an historical context) and movies that encourage kids to be rebelious toward parents, which probably covers 50% of the "kids" movies made now-a-days.

Also, the MPAA rating is probably the least of all criteria we consider when selecting a movie. For example, there are a few R-rated movies we have/will watch with our pre-teen and teenaged kids: Glory, The Last of the Mohicans, The Patriot, Passion of the Christ. Those movies may be violent, but the violence is presented in its correct historical context.

Hmmmm... mmm... Mkkay???

And you wonder why youngsters don't trust parents with logic like that.
