Cake recipes
well I have just been put in charge of making the birthday cakes for Christmas eve this year. I don't want to use a box mix as I am making everything else from scratch. I am looking for a recipe for Chocolate cake and White cake. I could also use a chocolate and vanilla icing as well. I am looking for really simple and as few ingredients as possible. I want to stay away from the apple sauce and sour cream too. SO let me know what you have. Thank you.

I had a really good devil's food recipe somewhere... I'll see if I can dig it up for you.

I often bake cakes, have found several good recipes on allrecipes.com, usually have good luck with anything that has a good user rating. I once bought a Woman's Day magazine at the grocery store because of the picture of a cake on the cover... it was a wicked cool cake with a vanilla/chocolate checkerboard pattern. Turns out they made a thick batter each of white cake and chocolate cake, dumped it in to a pastry bag, and poured it into 9" cake pans in a bulls-eye like pattern. A few layers of each into two pans, stack the finished cakes on top of each other, and when you cut the finished cake you get a checkerboard pattern. It was quite a simple idea but looked wicked cool! I tried making it with my standard chocolate and white cake recipes and it didn't turn out with quite as a distinct pattern, but it was somewhat neat looking and was tasty. The batter for my standard recipes wasn't thick enough and kind of ran together. Oh well. I'm sure you could find that recipe somewhere, it really looked cool!
Edit: I found the recipe, now I remember why I didn't follow it, 'cause I refuse to use boxed cake mixes. It's against my principles. But anyhoo, here it is if you're interested: http://www.womansday.com/recipes/766...-cake.html?pl= If you also prefer scratch cakes at least you can adopt the principle!
