kitchen fire safety 101

Subject: Must see Kitchen Oil Fire and the Remedy

What you see might save your life.

Many have maybe not heard of the wet towel approach.

This is very good information please watch the video you might consider emailing it to your kids too. That way you know they actually
listen to it! This video is only 34 seconds long but if you're ever in this situation it will save your kitchen, house and most of all you if
you follow the advice. Watch this video and learn what not to use to put out a grease fire.

At Charleston Navy base at the Fire Fighting Training school they demonstrate this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field. An
instructor would don a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10-foot pole toss water onto the grease fire. The results got the
attention of the students The water, being heavier than the oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive
force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty-foot high fireball that resembles a nuclear blast.
Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fireball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room.

Also do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.

I do like the wet towel approach to extinguishing that oil fire, but I don't believe most people are that calm and composed should they encounter a spark up in their kitchen. I would suggest having a small fire extinguisher at easy reach. They are inexpensive and can be mounted anywhere. In a panic most would be quicker to grab the extinguisher and spray away. There would be an awful mess but it's better than the alternative IMO.

It's a must-have for a kitchen. In those few seconds where you're liable to just grab a cup of water (basic instinct) you're better off with just buying an extenguisher and mounting it right on the wall.

Doesn't baking soda or some other chemical work to put the fire out?

I was always taught that baking soda works..and a good heavy lid to contain the fire in the pan. But then again, you have to have your wits about you when there is ANY kind of fire around..not just a grease fire.

I've always wanted to try ice cubes. In theory you should be able to bring the oil below the flash point.

Note to self: never try to deep fry a turkey during a rainstorm.

I'm not certain you'd be able to add enough ice quick enough to bring down the temp while it's on fire.

Mythbuster time!

Yeah, seeing as the melted ice will cause the "explosion" of steam like referenced above. Sounds to me like the theory of putting out a fire with a ton of gasoline.

Something tells me a rapid temp change would not be well received by the hot oil

My other idea is to try and smother the flame with more oil. Theoretically it should also work for the same reason.
