I think you misunderstand the Amish position. The rules against technology are not strict biblical absolute rules they are guidelines. The Amish believe that technology increases separation from society and each other.

they are generally free to ride in cars. shop at regular stores. use dentists, doctors, chiropractors, etc.
while they can't have phones in their houses, some have payphones in the yard. generators in the barn, etc.

no no...i don't mean they can drive cars. i know they usually ride in buggies. i mean they can ride in cars if a non-amish is driving. they usually do that when they are going on a longer trip or when going to and from work.

Why don't the Amish use electricity?
Amish people interpret linking with electrical wires as a connection with the world - and the Bible tells them they are not to be conformed to the world. (Romans 12:2) In 1919 the Amish leaders agreed that connecting to power lines would not be in the best interest of the Amish community. They did not make this decision because they thought electricity was evil in itself, but because easy access to it could lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life. Most of us today would think it impossible to live without the modern conveniences such as electricity and cars. What makes the Old Order Amish unique is not that they get along without modernity, but that they choose to do without it when it would be readily available. The Amish value simplicity and self-denial over comfort, convenience and leisure. Their lifestyle is a deliberate way of separating from the world and maintaining self-sufficiency. (Amish are less threatened by power shortages caused by storm, disaster, or war.) As a result there is a bonding that unites the Amish community and protects it from outside influences such as television, radios, and other influences. |

I have to admit I found it on a website. I forgot which one now, and meant to put it in the post. Found it doing a search for the difference between Amish and Mennonite (of which it appears generally there isn't a distinct difference.)

yeah there is. big difference. i lived in amish and mennonite country and you would never really confuse the two. unless you were from out of state.
![]() mennonites drive, interact tons more with people outside their religion, have electricity, wear colored clothing, use zippers, etc. |

Well they claim Amish is a break from the Mennonites, So ALL Amish AND Mennonite Settlements are different, according to them. So some of them will be able to do many things, while others can't do anything. From what I understand. But again , I'm not either of these.

We had Mennonites near where we lived. Nicest group of people you'd ever want to run across. You're right - like the Amish but less "standoffish".
A local mother died and husband was left to raise their very small children. The Mennonites invited him to live with them so he could work while the community cared for his family (he was not Mennonite.) It was one of the nicest things I've ever seen.
