Not sure if I'm interpreting what you wrote correctly, but I'll give it a shot. As a good uncle the ball is in your court to make sure she learns the process for doing these problems on her own rather than just give her the answer.

Let X = the number
You need to isolate X, and get it on 1 side of the equation
(2/3) * X = (3 1/2) + (3/8)*X (did I interpret the problem correctly???)

(2/3)*X = (7/2) + (3/8)*X

Find common denominators:
(16/24)*X = (7/2) + (9/24)*X

Subtract (9/24)*X from both sides to isolate X on one side:
(16/24)*X - (9/24)*X = (7/2)
(7/24)*X = (7/2)

Multiply both sides by (24/7) to get X
(24/7)*(7/24)*X = (24/7)*(7/2)
X = (24*7)/(7*2)

Cancel out
X = (12*1)/(1*1)
X = 12
