Fed-up mom arrested after kicking girls out of car

http://www.app.com/article/20090421/...e=nletter-news

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Usually, it's an empty threat: "If you kids don't stop fighting, I'm going to stop this car right now and leave you here!"

But police say a mother from Scarsdale went through with it, ordering her 10- and 12-year-old daughters out of her car in downtown White Plains and driving off.

Madlyn Primoff, 45, a partner in a Manhattan law firm, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, when she came to White Plains police headquarters Sunday evening to pick up her younger daughter.

The 10-year-old told police she had been arguing with her sister when her mother stopped the car at Post Road and South Broadway, told them to get out, and drove off.

The 12-year-old ran after the car and apparently caught up to it and was allowed back in.

A passerby who saw the younger girl crying on Mamaroneck Avenue bought her ice cream and contacted White Plains police, who searched the area but were unable to find the mother.

A short time later, Scarsdale police notified police in White Plains that the mother had just called to report the 10-year-old as missing. She was told that the girl was safe and sound at White Plains police headquarters.

Primoff, accompanied by her husband and older daughter, showed up at headquarters later that evening and was immediately arrested.

What the hell was SHE thinking? I can understanding trying to teach the kids a lesson, but leaving a 10 year old girl alone on a city street? I'm glad she got arrested.

Yeah, drop them off and drive around the block once to scare them, maybe. But don't drive away.

That tactic only really works in department stores... where you walk away and they come up running behind you.

did that on a trip when i was a kid. it was my fam, and another family who was close with us.
the little kid in that family was acting up at the end of a day after the amusement park, so in the parking lot, we closed the door and told him we're leaving him. he started crying when we pulled away, and after passing about 5 car spaces, told him to come and he better behave.
ride home was fine.

I saw a mom walk out of trader joe's checkout counter today because she was pissed at her two tween sons fighting.

talk about awkward. those two just stood there...standing yelling for "mom" in front of the whole store.

I think a big problem with kids today is parents are scarred to use time proven but slaps .because they get arrested if there a mark on there cheeks. and I'm sorry but the stand in the corner or in a bathroom for a time out. is not a cure all and only lasts so long. a hickory stick or leather belt had a lot longer lasting memory on a child's mind. sure grounding works sometimes but just the snap of a leather belt. sure wakes a child's mind up fast. and the other problem today is video games are used as babysitter tools. and a lot of parents don't have a clue as to what is detailed in the game's the kids are playing .they just know the kids are out of there way. so they get time to relax.
kids today also are left home alone after school more do to both parents working. it's not like the old days when mom was waiting there with hot brownies right out of the oven. for you as a snack and getting dinner ready. heck we do are home work and then go and play. or sit a play a board game with the parents after school if it was nasty out. now its in-front of a video game don't even try to bring out a board game thats gay if its not on a computer or x-box or similar.

oddly enough, I haven't had to hit my kids to get them to behave.

I don't. I consider myself good at my job. Hitting a kid is losing control, not instilling discipline. It's failure. At least, it would be if I did it.

Not all kids are the same. Some need more stronger disciplining than others. I was a quiet kid for whom obedience and good behavior seemed natural. My oldest brother was uncontrollable, rebelled against any spoken authority, and could have used a real good ass whuppin' from Dad. He never got it, or not as much as he needed, unfortunately, and now that he's grown he's the worse off for it, to be frank.

Again, consider yourself blessed.

i'm sure you're doing a great job, but you should still be thankful. doing a great job helps, but a lot of it has to do with the child as well.
