What's causing Obese newborns?
Infants don't sling back quarter pounders or movie popcorn. So why the 70% increase in infant Obesity. The article focuses on a possible culprit: obesogens.
Obesogens are environmental chemicals that can change undecided cells in newborns to become fat cells. This works out to be a double whammy in that more fat cells boost your fat absorption and release a hormone to tell you that you're hungry. The result is that you have to work harder at keeping fit and generally just go hungrier. http://www.newsweek.com/id/215179 I always love science and statistics. In many ways I feel like humans are too fallible seeing patterns where there are none and succumbing to conformational bias in choosing which anecdotal evidences to hear.

Is this something preventable, by eating better, exercise, etc. Or is it something that just kind of happens and she (the mom) is screwed? |

Gestational diabetes is usually a surprise, IIRC. There are some factors that put you at higher risk, but sometimes surprise! there it is.
