white dress shirts

is there any sort of fashion etiquette when it comes to wearing undershirts with white dress shirts?

i tend to prefer how a t-shirt (plain white as well, of course) feels under a dress shirt, but being that white dress shirts are often a tad translucent, i don't like the way you can see where the short sleeves end underneath. it just looks tacky, in my opinion.

therefore, i've gone to wearing "wife-beaters" underneath my white shirts, and i think it looks more "appropriate" i guess, but i don't like the way they feel.

just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on this...

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. It's not tacky.

There is no point to where a wife beater with a dress shirt. IMHO i think that looks worse than wearing nothing underneath. Then the sweat doesn't had to go as far.

As for myself, i always wear a clean white t-shirt underneath a dress shirt, of any color. I feel they absorb the sweat (hey, you wear one for 10 hours and not sweat ) better, without letting anyone know.

Again this is totally personal.

i'm personally not into wife-beaters either. i mean, you can see those just as well.

i prefer crew-neck tshirts under my dress shirts (none of that v-neck stuff....i don't want tufts of hair hanging out).

Look at it this way. If you're working in an environment where everybody else is wearing dress shirts, then most likely everybody else is wearing a tshirt or wifebeater underneath.

I recently purchased some vneck tshirts to wear under my dress shirts because the collar doesn't show above that lousy 2nd button. I have been wearing dress shirts for years and probably own 10 different brands, but not a single one fits me right.

I am starting a new job at Cisco in Boxborough on monday. Boxborough is way the F out there, right inside the 495 loop. RIght now i'm staying in winchester but looking for a place easily navigable from boxborough, and as close to the city as possible.
I'm in Winchester now. Its boring. I'm definitely considering brighton.

Well, if you live in Brighton near the intersection of Chestnut Hill Avenue and South St/Strathmore it will put you about 2-3 miles from the mass pike (i-90). I assume the Pike is the fastest way for you to get to Boxborough from that part of Boston. You'll also have quick access to the B line (green) which is 1 block away and you'll be about 10 minutes walk away from Cleveland Circle to pick up the C and D lines (Green).

Do the commuter rails make it out there? You could live down in Coolidge Corner, hop on the Green line and pick up the Commuter Rail in South Station (off the red line) or at the Fleet Center (i forget which stop it is)

Ack! no! I laugh at people that have wifebeaters on under thin shirts - looks stupid. Plus, if you live in a warm-weather climate you don't get the benefit of underarm sweat-catching and you can get big circles under the armpits.

The Hanes tagless t-shirts are great.

nah, its a really tough place to drive to. No help from public transportation. Although I could take I90, it would get expensive, and it woudnlt be the best route to get there. I may have no choice. Route 2 is the best way to get there. I90 goes too far south

Thanks for the imagery

I wear solid t-shirts if I'm wearing white dress shirts. Anything other color dress shirt then I wear whatever printed shirt I own.
