Where should I take my wife on a surprise kid-free vacation?
I have tons of frequent flier miles and lots of Hilton points.
I want to take my wife somewhere as a surprise in February. I'm going to fly my mom in from North Carolina to watch the boys and we will likely leave for 3-4 days. Where should we go? Distance is NOT a problem. I want to totally blow her mind. Her likes? She loves to ski, sit and relax on the beach, browse old antique shops and look at old buildings. She enjoys hiking also. I have thought about flying to Austria, France, or Switzerland for a ski weekend but don't know how close the airport is to a place like those and am not real fond of renting cars in Europe. Also, with it being just a 3-4 day thing, it's hard to get over jetlag in that short of a time period. We could even fly to South America somewhere and hang out on a beach somewhere. I only want to spend $1200-1700 excluding airfare and lodging so I can't go insane. Any suggestions? |

going to an exotic country in europe or south america is probably a bad idea. you'll waste precious time on a plane and in customs, and if you've never been there before, 3-4 days (minus time spent traveling) isn't really enough time to appreciate it. How about a nice resort in Mexico? Or maybe research some places in canada, and get a cabin secluded in the woods somewhere? are there any locations you've gone before on vacation that hold a lot of meeting (ex: Graf proposed in Hawaii, so going back there would be a nice romantic surprise)
btw, it's very sweet of you to surprise your wife with a trip!

Sb is pretty nice. Or maybe San Francisco. Umm skiing and the beach.. I guess maybe utah is nice, or the oregon coast although it will be too cold because its still february. How about the smaller islands of hawaii so that its not as touristy..
Or a nice spot in Mexico is always warm, beachy and not too expensive.. Good luck

If you only have 3-4 days, I would save the Europe trip for another time. I would highly recommend Switzerland and Austria if you had at least a week. During that time of year, skiing should be really nice in Colorado, Vermont and Canada. Heck, it may even be warm enough to ski in jeans and a t-shirt ![]() |

personally, i've never been, i've just heard it's gorgeous. Puerto Vallerta and Cabo tend to be popular, and in Feb, you shouldn't be overpowered by students on spring break. |

we both hate touristy places. went to gatlinburg because that's where my family wanted to go and almost vomited because of the commercial crap.

i agree with some others, if you only have 3-4 days then save the long distance areas for another time, don't want to spend half that time flying there.
People at my work have said great things about the British Virgin islands, I personally would love to go there and get away from the city.

hmmm...good call. they have a hilton resort in the dominican republic also. and hawaii. i have enough miles to fly myself, my wife, austin, and a babysitter to hawaii. that would be cool.
if the babysitter is jesper parnavik's ex-babysitter. well, she's married now. but she has a twin! =) |

That's not exactly kids-free. Not that I disagree with the idea, but you still have the kid around, even they are being babysat. Not the same, IMO. ![]()

To me, I'd take a few less days entirely kid free. just imo, it would be much easier.

Lancaster Pennsylvania-and surrounding area-tons of antique barns, lots of handmade quilts-its very quaint,romantic,fun..with great food, and tons of things you can find to do there..(it's also not too far from Hershey PA which will be lighting the park up at night for it's holiday display)..or how about Cape May New Jersey..they do a whole big victorian christmas there-horse drawn carraiges, lighted victorian homes, etc..it's like something out of a movie..

Make sure you can actually USE your FF miles.
You may need to taylor your trip around the availability of FF Mileage seats. I had to do that with my honeymoon. Just because you can get a flight out, doesn't necessarily mean you can get one home ![]() Santa Barbara is awesome, although it might be a little cold in February. Cancun, Mexico is great, a little touristy, but you can always rent a car to go see the ruins. That's really neat.

I went to Cabo San Lucas for my bachelor party and I have to say I would have much rather been there with my then fiance/now wife. From San Diego it was a short flight and there were tons of really nice places to stay. (My friends rented us a house, Casa Tequila, for our trip but I have to admit that was probably a mistake for a few reasons.)
That said, you might also consider Cheeca Lodge on Marathon Key, FL or going further down to Key west. Cheeca lodge is one of my favorite places to stay...even though we could just drive back to the house, we have opted to spend the night there. Lots of relaxation, water sports, you can drive down to key west or head up to Key Largo or even Miami if the notion hits. The benefit of this is that you are in the states, same money, no customs/passports, and none of the worry about going outside the states. Other options would be Ixtapa/Zuijanajo (sp) Mexico, Costa Rica, Aruba, British Virgin Islands, or even just a cruise. Personally, I have gone to Aruba and BVIs both for extended periods of time, although both were a while ago (Aruba was 1983, BVI was 1993). My family and friends have done Costa Rica and raved about it. Same with Ixtapa/Zuijanajo.

iceland. or maybe puerto rico. naaah... iceland. you could even catch the latest volcanic activity from your sweet spot in an outdoor, crystal-blue, natural hot spring bubbly spa...
airfair's cheap, hotel is included this time of year, and it's not really cold til after new years... not oo long of a flight out of ny or baltimore... closer than the rest of europe ![]() actually, my best advice is don't surprise her. i know that's fun, but maybe you oughtta aske her where SHE wants to go...

well...we decided to go to utah skiing in feb with some friends. i'm flying my mom in from NC and she's gonna watch the kids while we spend a few days on the slopes. it's a pretty cheap trip. i used miles for my mom, wife, and myself and i have enough hilton points to pay for the homewood suites we'll be staying in. i'd love to somehow hook up with kim. i don't know how far midvale is from you tho'.
