I use a crock pot. Add potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, whole tomatoes (peeled and then crush them by hand) and anything else you would like to us. Basil leaves are always good to. Add water, onion soup mix, and some flour to thicken the stew. Set it on low and wait a day.

You can dredge the beef cubes in flour then brown them. Put your vegies, spices, and meat in a pot with water to cover and simmer until tender. If you don't have spices, pick up a beef stew flavor packet from the store. (with the taco, gravy, and spaghetti packs)

I do. In fact, I made crockpot stew yesterday. There's nothing like coming home after a day at work to the smell of dinner cooked and ready to eat.

You don't need a crockpot, you can make it in a regular big pot, just make sure you stir it occasionally so it doesn't burn/stick to the bottom.

How do you stir it occasionally when you're not home?

You don't need to stir it if it's in a crockpot, in fact you shouldn't even lift the lid.

Only stir it if you are cooking it on the stove top. Sorry for the confusion.

depending on the size they got for $20-$50. Check out Linens and Things or Target. I think I saw one at Target thay came with a bonus mini crockpot for gravy and sauces.

Just make sure you get one with a removable crock. The others a pain to wash.

my roommate used to make crock pot stews. he'd set it overnight and we'd put it in the fridge before going to work. be careful not to over fill the crock pot or accidently set it too high. my roommate did that once (over filled and set it too high) and there was black bean stew running down the side of the counter in the morning. it was not fun to clean up in the morning.

Anyways, back on topic. Dumb question. I got a crock pot today, and there's a fairly large cavity between the bottom of the pot holder and the pot itself. I don't understand how it would heat it very well with such a space. Do I fill this with water?

Beef Stew-Obby Style

1-2 lbs of stew beef..browned in a hot bottom of stew pot with a bit of olive oil
4 good sized potatoes (or more if you like loads of spuds) Chopped into 8ths
2 good sized onions chopped into 8ths
6 really fat carrots cut into 1 inches pieces
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 celery stalks-cut into 1/2 inch pieces (no leaves please)
1 cup crushed gingersnap cookies
1/2 cup flour
====
once you brown the meat in the pot-add the flower 1 tablespoon at a time to start making the gravy...next, add celery, onions and carrots..cover to top of veggies with water-then add one more cup of water after that.
Add gingersnaps..cook for one hour-stirring every so often..(cook uncovered)
then after one hour add spuds and let cook till your ready to eat...if you like it very brown in color-add a teaspoon of instant coffee...it enhances the flavor.
right before serving up-toss in about a tablespoon of butter and stir till its melted..this gives the gravy a nice smooth texture.

will also work in crock pots..just don't add the extra water..but you still MUST brown the meat before putting into the crock.
(you can also add 1 can of CAMPBELLS tomato soup if you like a tomato base, and toss in some peas if you like them-but only right before you serve it up or they will turn to mush.)

I use a crock-pot myself, I cook it on either Hi or Low depending on my time frame. I always do a web search for recipes and compare them.
