No internal relationships permitted!

After starting my new job, I was required today to sign a document, stating I would not engage in a romantic relationship with any coworker within the company.

I understand the logic, so there would be no chance of unfair treatment, or sexual harassment, but this seems limiting and kind of silly. Do you think it will be enforced, is this something that is serious?

I am not expecting to have any romantic relationships within my place of employment, but am I not allowed to ask a female at my place of employment to lunch or to a party for fear of reprimand?

Well if they have a Contract for it .. I would assume they enforce it.. Or atleast want to have that contract on the books so if they decide to terminate you.. All your base belong to them. We deal with things like that a Lot in the military.. at Certain commands if the C.O. doesn't like relationships.. he can "Ban" them.. But thats what we get for working in a job that isn't democratic

A lot of clauses like that are more 'CYA' for the company... I doubt they would actively enforce it, but if a relationship causes problems at the office, they have an easy out to fire one of both of you.

Plus, just the act of having you sign the form lets you know that such activities are frowned upon, and odds are pretty good that that's enough deterrent right there.

A lot of companies have such policies now so that if there is ever a sexual harassment lawsuit, they can say, "See? We have a policy in place to prevent this form happening! And AmRivlin even signed it, so you know he knew about it! Sue him!"

i don't think there's anything wrong with going to lunch, but I would ask the HR people for clarification.

That's just a normal thing. At my company, a couple can't work in the same department if one has influential personnel decision.

Heck when BigJon and I were just dating his company told me to fill out and application and they would hire me. I hung out there so much that I knew everything anyway so might as well put me to work. We were in separate departments but they were right next to each other.
