Crawling

Last night I had Cammie on the floor playing and he was rolling around like normal, and I walked out of the room for a little while. When I returned he was up on his hands and feet with his body suspended in air. Then he dropped back to the floor and got up on his hands and knees. I really think he will be crawling soon, but he is only 4 months old. Isn't that a little to young to crawl?

Yeah, kids generally start crawling around 9 months old but I've seen plenty of kids crawl earlier... however in my admittedly limited experience with children I haven't seen them crawl at 4 months yet. That said, I'd keep an eye on him just to be safe. btw... do you have him sleeping on his belly or back?

Better too early than too late. Josh started walking at 10 months and never did crawl really. so who knows.

He sleeps on which he feels like since he rolls.

Good. It's better for babies to sleep on their backs than on their bellies although it does tend to slow down how early they start rolling and crawling. If he's looking like he's getting ready to crawl then I'd keep an eye out for him in case he decides to start jetting around ahead of time. btw... does he have any older siblings?

That "rule" keeps changing. It has changed twice since we started having babies.

How long have your wife been having babies? I know they only recently changed it to having them lie on their backs when sleeping (aka back to sleep program) because lying on their back to sleep is supposed to lower the risk of SIDS while sleeping but I didn't know that they went from back sleeping to belly sleeping in the recent past (I'm new at this stuff). I just keep reminding people to put the baby on his/her belly as much as possible during the day when they can keep an eye on him/her (aka tummy time) so that the kid will learn to roll over faster. I did do a little research last year on this and the back to sleep with lots of tummy time does correlate with lower rate of SIDS with almost identical gross motor development so until someone comes up with better data, I'll continue to push it.

I never really made my kids sleep on their backs, if they were really fussy and I flipped them over and went to sleep I let them sleep that way, I am right there holdin;g them anyway, so I never saw the harm in it. I would not do it if I put them in their own bed by themselves, but at night when I am there I have no problem letting a newborn sleep on their belly.

I also keep my kids on the floor on their belly as much as possible. Granted when they cry I pick them up for a while and when they are calm I put them down again so that they can learn to roll, crawl, and eventually walk. We do not have a walker or a saucer, I have already put the swing away and the bouncer. I really want them to learn things so I put them on the floor.

When we had our first baby in 1985, I think they were recommending on the back. Shortly after, they recommended on the tummy because of the possibility of choking. Then it was back to the back due to the SIDS research. We always go with the latest advice. If I remember right, the kids went to sleep faster on their tummy.

When the kid is playing on the floor, we always put him on his belly. He's rolling around and crawling now, so it doesn't really matter anymore.

Oh yeah, he's the cutest baby in the world, too.

My daughter did that for a long time. She would get up on all fours then drop down. She just barely started to actually crawl within the last month though, and she just turned 10 months old.

Wow! I was 9 months old when I started walking. My daughter gets up and takes a few steps here and there, but for the most part still holds on to things like the couch and what not.

Yeah.. My mom was worried and they took me to a doctor and they cut my leg open to check for a muscle disease.. I think they ended up just determining that I was lazy.. and knew there was no point in wasting my time walking.. when people would just pick me up and carry me

My middle son didn't walk until 18 months. He had some tendon problem which caused discomfort when he'd try to stand flat on his feet.

I always think it's awesome when parents spend a lot of time with their children. That is the best indicator of how well a baby (or for that matter kid of any age) is going to develop. Oh, an I agree with you on the walker thing... they suck and if anything slow down the kid's development to walking. I don't know why we allow those things at all.

kb0wwp, thanks for the information on the policy changes. I didn't know that they have been flip-flopping that much recently. And that is one adorable baby.

More baby pics!!!

austin didn't crawl a ton but walked at 10-11 months. i think carter started crawling earlier but didn't walk until later. he's got tiny feet so i don't know if that matters or not.

he was up on his hands and feet for like 5 minutes last night. Then he dropped to his knees for a little while then just back to the floor, not really going anywhere, but getting up.
