what's your max heart rate?
i was riding today w/a buddy and we were racing to the top of a hill and i completely blew up. i looked down and my HR was at 191 and i kept pushing it. i stood up to sprint and the gas tank was empty. i let him go and noticed i was over 200. i think my max is 210 or so right now. supposedly you lose about 1 beat/minute for every year you age.

It varies from person to person, but as a general rule, your max heart rate does tend to decrease as you get older (though the rate at which it decreases can vary based on how much you exercise).
As for me, I've never had a monitor on when I'm going all out. I know that when I used to run intervals on the track, I would get around 180ish....of course, those aren't all-out either.

The generic formula we used in highschool health/PE classes was 210-AGE=Max HR, which would mean your heart should have exploded
. But, by looking at some search results it seems that there's a few other generally accepted formulas: http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/maxhr.htm MHR = 206.3 - (0.711 × Age) or MHR = 217 - (0.85 × Age) according to both of these, you should be dead too. OK, kidding aside, it's possible that your heart can handle more BPM for various reasons or that your meter is a bit off.

those are good ways to approximate your max hr. of course, actually checking to see what it is at max is another way. lol.

Just out of curiosity, what does it mean if you hit the 160-180 range regularly? Working out too hard? My heart sucks? I'm fat and outta shape? (Well, the last one is a given...)

Depending on your age, weight, and some other factors, it could just mean you're pushing yourself pretty hard. When I do cardio on a machine my target heart rate is 160, I usually keep it around 170. As you get older your target heart rate decreases much like your max heart rate does. So, you're probably doing a pretty good job if you keep it between 150-170, 180 might be pushing it to stay at for a while. As you work out more and more frequently you will have to start pushing yourself harder to stay in your target heart range. |

lol. lance's resting hr is in the low 30's. in the individual time trial on sat he average 184 for i think 19k. when i'm riding hard it's hard for me to stay under 175 or so. during my mtn bike race last november i think i averaged 178 or so for 3 hours. yikes.

I think the lowest I've ever gotten my resting heart rate was low 50s, and that just seemed like a ridiculous fitness level. I can't imagine how in shape you must be to have your heart rate hovering around 30.

A heart rate of 300? Yeah, that'd be pretty high. Cheapie's right, you're thinking blood pressure.

Dang, mine is 66. I thought I was in good shape. Man, Burshui you must be in super duper good shape. You must work out 4 hours a day every day.

Normally my resting heart rate is somewhere between 100 and 120. However for a change today it was at 82.

Resting heart rate for me is around 60-80, when I work out it is normally 17-185 for an hour of cardio. If I really push it, I can get it up to about 190 or a little higher. Today I was working real hard and got up to about 196, I couldn't keep it up for long cause I was completly out of breath.
