Cloth vs. Disposable

Alright I want to hear your responses. If you have used cloth let me know how well they worked for you. I am just starting to use cloth during the day when we are at home, but no idea really about them. I know I could go to a cloth diaper natural parent forum but those poeple would be bias. So let you opinions run.

Everyone I've known who used cloth (including us) used them about a month, then went back to disposable. Pampers are not that expensive.

Disposable all the way...

Those are bad enough... but cloth.... well I ain't the one who's gonna wash them.

BTW... we used Huggies, cause they were on sale more than Pampers were. Luckily DFJ was potty trained shortly after reaching his 2nd birthday.

cloth is more breatheable than disposable (provides more air circulation) and would lessen the occurance of diaper rash, but it is less absorbent than disposables. if time and energy isn't an issue for you, i'd recommend cloth diapers. otherwise, you can choose to use disposables as long as your baby doesn't show any symptoms from the dyes, dioxin and other chemicals found in disposable diapers.

well Pampers and Huggies are expensive. Luvs are not that bad, but they have changed them to a really girly plurple color and when I let my son go in just a diaper everyone thinks he is a girl.

I am using them on a 6 mo old and I have only used them for one full day. I am also using them on my daughter at night because I had been using regular diaper and had to throw and unused diaper away in the morning.

I just wanted what people thought, how messy they have been for others, and so forth.

I have the time to wash them, I actually have more time to wash than to go to the store and buy them. I am usually taking the kids to the store to buy diapers when they are wearing the last one. The only thing that sucks is I only have enough for a day and a half right now So I have to wash everyday to get by.

I wanted to see what people thought before I try to invest more money into the cloth diapers.

You just gotta "value shop" for them.

The MEGA packs of Huggies at Wal-Mart generally were the cheapest unless someone was running a sale.

Per individual diaper I pay about 17 cents for one when you divide it out and the cheapest I have found any other brand is 19 or 20 cents each for a size three.

I have tried the store brands and they just don't hold up. I have to use plastic pants over them to keep everything in, and they run small so I have to buy the next size up.

Target is the best frice for the Luvs.

I use cloth diapers for cleaning cloths. They work great on cars too.

8 yrs ago when I was broke and single, I started useing white cloud or what ever they are called at Walmart. The daycare that Mikey was going to at the time absolutely fell in love. I did too. They were the first diaper that he wore that he didn't leak out of, or poo out of.

When Patrick was born, as soon as he wore size 1, I went back to them and haven't looked back.

I got on the local freecycle and saw a woman had a wanted up for cloth diapers and sent her an email asking her if she got more offers than she needed would she toss them my way because I am in need of more. So I hope she has a lot of responses and is nice enough to share.

I also wanted to add some more questions for you cloth diaper users.

Did they leak a lot?
How did you care for them?
Would you use them again?
How often did you have to wash them?
Did you use a diaper service?

I think the brand depends on the baby.

As for the cloths, I can tell you what I remember from my brother (this would be 25 yrs ago)

I remember a diaper pail full of water, bleach and dreft in the bathroom, I remembering washing out the solids into the toilet before the soak.

Mom would wash twice a day and I would fold (or both because my brother was very sick as a baby)

We used them on Billy when plastic liners were popular, I don't remember them leaking a whole lot. Definately not anymore than disposable diapers. I do remember changing him more frequently when he was wearing them.

I probably would use them if I had started using them way back when Audie was born. But my ex was like "no" and he wanted me to go back to work, so I lost that battle.

As for the diaper service, if you count me as the service mom used, then yes she did

i don't have kids, but my wife and i plan to use cloth. i think there are three keys to cloth diapers:

1. a seperate washing machine next to the changing table. keep it 1/2 full of water, detergent [preferably vegetable based], and tea tree oil. when you change the diaper, chuck it in the washer. when it's full, wash.

2. enough diapers to fill at least a small load in the washer.

3. diaper liners. they are thicker/stronger than TP, but not nearly as much disposable waste as an entire diaper. sort of like a few tissues. when you change a #2 diaper, you just chuck the liner (and its contents) into the toilet and flush.

Definitely disposable. And Luvs are the best combination of cost / quality...

Costco brand is not bad either. Huggies and/or Pampers would be 4th choice due to cost, not offering better quality than other choices.

Yeah the one things I need is to get more of them. I use my main machine and use a diaper machine for the dirty ones and have to wash them everyday so that I have enough. I hope to buy at least another pack this pay day.
