Another Dishwasher Question
I know this has been discussed before in this thread, but it is a year old and some of the links are broken.
Does anyone have any more recommendations for a reliable dishwasher make/model? I don't run it a lot, maybe 6-8 times/month. What I am looking for is: - reliablity - manual dial operated instead of electronic controls (don't want to deal with repairs due to electronics - Needs to be available in black I have had luck buying from Sears in the past but I am open to other recommendations. Thanks! |

I have had great luck with Maytag. For an appliance, a Maytag Dishwasher is one of the few I would buy over a Kenmore/Whirlpool.
The problem with a dial type mechanisim is that you are only going to find them on cheaper models, the less effective washers with a lower build quality. |

We're getting ready to purchase one ourselves...the ugly part is, it's a total fresh install (we've never had a dishwasher at our house, so they have to run the water line, drain line, and electrical line, as well as cut out the cabinet spot). I'm still fearing the cost of the installation.
![]() I'll go dig around Consumer Reports (I'm a paying subscriber) and see if I can post their reviews; they recently did an updated piece on dishwashers. [edit] I've read from fellow G|A'ers that Kenmore is just a Maytag that Sears rebadges with the Kenmore name. I think you can safely purchase Kenmore, Maytag, and Whirlpool...I don't know how well I'd trust any others. We decided to get the Kenmore 1703 model, BTW. It was rated a CR Best Buy because of features and the fact that it uses less water (6gal) than most average (8-10gal) and less energy. They have an Amana for $330 that also was rated a CR Best Buy, that uses 8gal/cycle and has decent features. It has electronic controls though; I don't know if you'll find one that doesn't, truthfully...I don't think they make 'em anymore. ![]() Anyway - check this out if you want (hopefully I'm not breaking CR copyright although they only mention of copyright violation on their site is if the content is used commercially and/or for a free, but education purposes is ok and that's what I believe this to be). ![]() Last edited by zero2dash : 02-01-2006 at 02:07 PM. |

Just make sure you get a single panel front door. The two panel models waste a lot of space and basically suck. I also strongly dislike the stainless steel interior ones since they always look dirty.

How much are you willing to spend?
KitchenAid & Bosch are probably the best overall, but they'll set you back $$$$$. But you can count on them lasting a good 15-20 years. |

I have one of the Bosch/Siemens (made by Bosch Home appliances) and I love it. In fact, it's the 2nd one on the list. Stainless steel tub, quiet operation w/ digital display, cleans well. Everyone who uses it loves it. Was totally $$$ though

In most cities Sears has an outlet store where they sell all of their dishwashers at a big discount....they are brand new, but out of the box.
Here in San Diego, we also have a couple of other firms that do the same...sell all the brands new, they just don't have the shipping box. I bought all new kitchen appliances this way and saved 40%. |

Well he gets to eat, sleep and live for free in a nice comfortable well heated and lit house... the least he can do is help with chores around the house. We did it when we were kids... so there's nothin' wrong with having them a little work to do as part of their daily routine. ![]() <Shakes cane with a fist> Dayuuum young whipper snappers... Had a Maytag portable - you know, those ones that roll on wheels and hook up to the faucet. Worked GREAT! The electronic controls never gave me any problems, and it always cleaned perfect.
So when I decided to take the plunge and build one in, I bought a Maytag again. UGH! What a POS! Poor cleaning - have to use the hyper-whampus wash mode for everything. Despite being a high-end model instead of lower-midrange, it's not quieter (that portable was very quiet). Now it's 1 year old and making weird noises. When Maytag offered a service contract on it via mail - you bet I bought it! It'll blow up for sure. If I had to do it again, I'd buy a Whirlpool made Kenmore. |
