Really Good Comment on Emphasis of Self Esteem

http://blogs.phillyburbs.com/blog.php?p=3992&cat=39

This is a reader's comment concerning the interviews of prospective singers at American Idol. I definitely agree with this guy.

"Actually, the Idol audition phase is teaching some important lesson. We are seeing, first hand, the young people who have been weaned on "self-esteem," the incorrect notion that they are excellent and [this is important] that it's wrong to be judgmental. These talentless kids truly believe they are offering outstanding peformances because relatives, friends, and teachers have never given them constructive, honest criticism. Our culture continues to embrace the lie that self-esteem is more important than accomplishment. Thus, these kids grow up with big egos, and an exaggerated sense of entitlement. This accounts for the profane-laced hissy fits after Simon tells them the truth. He says what legions of gutless and clueless parents and teachers will not say."

I agree with this. Self-esteem is the biggest crock that has been perpetrated on kids and parents.

mental health and stability come from loving well and working well. That's the way it should be. Care and purpose.

I agree with LP. I especially like when Paula asks "How do you think you sounded?"

Low self esteem keeps people humble. I prefer it that way.

and American Idol is a shining example of this. falsely inflating egos and lies told to protect feelings are only setting kids/people up for big disappointment when the truth is actually told to them.

so many times on AI contestants will say, "but my mother, my friends, my co-workers tell me i am a great singer" and THEY REALLY SUCK!

Shifty

Yeah, that is a terrible set up. My mom told me I was good singer when I was a kid. I found out the hard way when the teacher had me sing a song in front of the entire class. Oh my god!!!! I can still hear the laughter~

Glad I found out at an early age that I was tone deaf and that my mom just really loved me.

or did she

Heh...I've never fallen into the American Idol addiction trap. I can't sing worth a damn, but I have a very good ear for music, etc. I can almost instantly tell is an instrument is out of tune without using tuners, etc. I can also readily play music by ear. But I can't modulate my own singing voice.
