How do you keep your salad veggies from going bad?

You know those pre-made Salad-to-Go bags that they sell at the groceries?

Once you open the bag, how do you keep the salad from turning all brown and gross?

they do seem to spoil fast after you open them. i liked them for the convienence, but lately i've switched back to preparing my own from "scratch" because the salad stays fresher so much longer.

AIr is the key. It turns brown from oxidizing. Keep out as much air as you can when you reclose it. They will not keep forever though. Just eat them more often. Or buy a head of lettuce- it will usually be cheaper and last longer.

What is this salad you speak of? Is this some new kind of tasty animal to eat?

I buy a bag of spinache lettuce, and one of snap peas. I noted they are so low in calories that I can eat 1/2 the bag and still only take in 100 calories...so for me they go so fast (just a few days) that they never go bad.

It's the air and moisture that makes them go bad.

Life is too short and beautiful to be eating plain lettuce. Get mixed greens/spinach/mesclun.

Yes we did.

The best way to keep vegitables from spoiling is to eat them while they are fresh.

I also go for the spinach. It lasts longer and you can throw some on like a sandwich.

i've heard some lemon juice slows down the browning.

I think the reason the prepared salads go bad so fast is because they are cut with a knife or something and not ripped with hands. I used to work in a restaurant and you could always tell when one of the cooks used a knife to cut the lettuce instead of their hands because the blade of the knife always seemed to make the lettuce turn brown much faster...

The best way to keep vegetables from going bad.

Leave them in the ground.

make sure you adjust the bins in your fridge properly, one for fruits and one for veggies, and then keep stuff in the right bin. those bins are there for a reason.

Honestly, I have some those bins in my fridge and when you take em out... there is nothing different about them (as far as veggies versus fruits).

It's just storage in mine. And unsealed veggies will still turn brown in them.

The worst thing about those pre-packed salad bags is half of them are already brown in the store. You have to hit up the store on the right time around here cause they'll leave the browning lettuce bags on the shelf all week long.

We've kind of switched to "make it from scratch" unless we know we'll eat the whole bag that night...if company is over or something.
