Setting up a 6 Month trip to Australia. Alot of coincidence?
First off, nothing is set in stone. I somewhat Carved this creative idea out of my head. So forgive the setup info.
Presently I am in the US, and I crave a trip.. a BIG trip. I first looked up Backpacking through europe for a month, but scratched that cause I don't have 5 Grand (though by september I would). On my search for the Ultimate Trip I ran by the bunac website (they setup students/or young adults, with permits, papers and stuff for Work Abroad type programs). One of their destinations is Australia. Now I am not very fond of working in a Taco stand for 6 months in order to get by out there, but I then remembered that the head of the Institute that I now work (part-time) for Works out there also (for Canberra University). Now I am thinking that maybe it is possible that he could set me up with a job/position out there (it'd be better than the taco stand). Now thats a big plus for me (cause I'd have a nice office, academic institution, alot of women around), but I also notice that they have a Academic Department for Forensic Computing (that is the major I am taking in the US). Now to finish my degree in the US, I need to do an Externship (internship). Now My boss works for Canberra U, and Canberra U Has a forensic department, with ties to other forensic departments (get my drift). I think the idea is crazy, and very roundabout... but is it doable, and is it fate?!?! |

You'd be stupid and hate yourself if you didn't pursue it further. Doesn't mean you have to DO it . . . but definitely pursue it and find out how feasible it is.
I took to a kind of "crazy" idea, as well . . . I've now been in Germany for about a year. Ultimately, it's not so crazy if you are still able to stay on the path you originally wanted (academic/career) . . . and you get a tremendously different and valuable experience by going abroad . . .

BUNAC- British Universities North America Club. I did a work abroad through the to Great Britain. Ended up working for Harrod's Department store where the rich and famous shop in London. They help you get the paper work and have some resources to help find jobs and a place to stay, but you still have to find the job yourself. Some people worked in pubs or made tea for companies. Basic entry, no skills required jobs. If you can line something up before you go- even better. It was a great experience. I stayed in London for six months and then travelled for another five months- two on a bicycle. Certainly do it if you have the chance. They have programs in other countries like Spain and Germany but I lacked enough language skills to try one of those. I believe you can start as late as six months after graduation (which is what I did). Contact your friend- it may take time to get things set up. Go for it and good luck!
