What constitutes yelling?

If you are talking with someone and get annoyed at what they are saying so you take a tone with them but dont raise your voice....is this yelling?
What about if you raise your voice but dont change your tone?

I know it's not always easy, but I believe it is the best if you can manage to "yell," not with tone or volume, but with word choice.

Sorry that didn't really answer your question.

i always equate yelling with raising of the voice. i mean someone can yell out good things or bad things, but the volume tells me they are yelling.

I concur here. I think Arkistan means you can get more serious or angry acting with tone changes and different words even when you don't yell. but like i dont think that its yelling if your voice is not loud. You can be mad with a whisper but you can't shout without yelling.

it's pretty hard to raise your voice without changing your tone, isn't it?

and that isn't an answer either

I just tried it. It's hard, but it sounds damn funny in a retarded sort of way. I think I'm gonna do this whenever I get into a serious argument I don't think I can win.

Heh. Nobody can hear me anyway, especially if there are more than, say, 20 people in the room, or say, a restaurant. My voice is pretty deep, and unless I try really hard (diaphragm pushing, etc), my voice just kind of blends into the ether, and the bodies and walls around me. It gets really annoying. Sometimes I have to consiously raise the pitch of my voice as well as the volume just to be heard in a small to modest size crowd.

Not quite that deep, but deep enough to disappear in a crowd. Nobody can every hear me unless I basically yell.

To me there are different forms of yelling...

Yes, most yelling involves using a loud voice, however not always is it done because you are annoyed. You could yell just because the person you are trying to communicate to is far away or "hard of hearing" so that you can get your message across (not that you are mad at them... just like when your Momma used to yell "time to come inside" when you were all the way down the block playing. It didn't mean that she was mad at you... yet (of course if you didn't come soon the tone of her yell probably would change.)

You can be annoyed and argue without yelling... but for some folks this is just hard to do as they can't help but yell. Getting louder than someone else (overtalking) is a form of dominance. You yell louder as to drown out what the other person is saying.

I use to be a waitress and I could never hear anyone with a deep voice when they spoke....waiting for a hearing test cause my dr thinks I may be going deaf in one ear...so I always repeated what people would order to make sure it was right but for some reason they always treated me like I was an idiot after that. You would think they would be happy I was making sure of the order instead of just bringing everyone my favorite foods...
