BAKERSFIELD - A man who took his girlfriend to the country and allegedly set her on fire earlier this week was arrested.
Bakersfield Police said the incident happened Tuesday morning, in the Foothills east of Pioneer Drive.
Authorities said that's where Israel Evaro Jr., 29, doused his girlfriend with gasoline and then lit her on fire.
Investigators said he then took her to Kern Medical Center for treatment.
The woman, who is in her mid-30’s, was suffering from severe burns to 55 percent of her body, according to police.
“After their interview with Evaro, they believe he intentionally doused the victim with gas the set her on fire,” said BPD’s Det. Paslay. “He’s charged with attempted murder, arson, spousal abuse and being under the influence.”
Court records show that Evaro was scheduled to be in court on Monday on charges that he beat and terrorized the same woman.
Evaro is now scheduled to be arraigned on the additional charges Thursday.
He’s being held on $675,000 bail.
The victim, whose name is not being released, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Fresno for treatment.
She is in critical condition.
