I remember we had a little discussion about how useful Coke is at, among other things, stripping metal. With the proliferation of these free stainless steel cups, do you think it's safe to drink soda out of them?
Or did I just answer my question in the first sentence...any thoughts?

Most of the mugs, if not all, should be galvanized so they won't corrode under light acid solutions. Tomato juice as well as lemon juice are as bad as coke, so I think it should be OK unless you start scratching the inside. Then you're screwed. It's like taking off the teflon on a pan.
Ço£o§§ü§ - yeah you can read into it...

perhaps you could enlighten me ...

What IS up with taking the teflon off the pan? My parents wig out every time they see a scratch on my frying pan.

Someone, please tell me ... what are the detrimental effects?

I never realized myself there's a problem with scratches on a pan.

If cookware chips or peels because of improper use and the non-stick finish is accidentally eaten, is it toxic?

No, DuPont non-stick finishes are inert and non-toxic.
