I've been having trouble trying to flash my bios in win2k. Since there is no DOS at all I can't figure out how to do it. I've tried booting up with an old win98 disk to try to get to dos, but it won't recognize my non FAT partition. Any ideas?

All you have to do is make a boot disk that has only system files on it by typing format a:/s on a win98 system then move the bios flash util and files onto the disk. you should now be able to boot off the disk and do your flash. Good luck.

I'm using an Abit BH6 motherboard.

I'll try the win98 startup disk once I have access to a win98 system.
But there has got to be a way to flash the bios without doing that...

Did you try command prompt? Win2K does have command prompt, that might work.
yes, what is this about no dos?? the command prompt functions as dos, just like console/terminal in linux.

I would try flashing the bios from command prompt though. I know doing it from other windows os command prompts can seriously screw up your computer. As in fry the bios chip which means eather you get a new chip or if its soldered to the mobo you get a new mobo. I dont know what would happen with win2k but I wouldn't risk it. I know the 98 formated disk works because that is how I have done it. Now that I think about it you probably dont even need 98. Go to command prompt in 2000 and do format a:/s then boot from the disk, if it gets you to c:\ then you are good to go. I just cant remember if that works or not, I got rid of win2k a few weeks ago.

doing it from the command prompt doesn't work. It fails because of vital programs that windows runs.

yes, the win2k command prompt functions like a terminal in linux, and it's also no more related to dos than a linux terminal (except that it shares the same basic commands and appearance). win2k does have a dos emulator (ntvdm) but it's not likely to work for flashing a bios. the only option is to grab a boot disk and put all the files on it. asus users are in luck though, since asus has a utility that allows you to flash a bios from within win2k.Originally posted by coleslaw

I can not format a disk with the /s switch, nor is the sys a: command available! I hope I can dig up a win98 boot disk, but this is crazy that win2k is missing a boot disk. The flash utility for my gigabyte motherboard looks to make sure no EMM386 or similar memory drivers are available.
i'm not at my 2K machine right now...
but i believe u can make a boot disk from:
control panel, add/remove software, "startup disk tab"
the only machine i have to check here on is a ME machine, and i think it looks the same on 2K...
good luck
I checked, the add/remore programs window is different in win2k, and there is no boot disk option. Can someone verify that I am not missing something?
Nope its not there under add/remove programs.
Ok, heres the deal. To install the bios, you need an old dos based OS boot disk, win2k is a no go. BUT there may be a way based on these win2k recovery techniques:
