i was just at a computer show this saturday in pomona (to all those people who know where that is) i got a dope ass deal for a case w/ 300w power supply ($35). i checked it out and the case is AMD recommended but its has a generic 300w power supply. My question is, will that power supply effect anything if it isn't AMD recommended? I know that i should use a AMD recommended but, if this will do then i'm alright.
My experience has always been, cheap power supply=fried mobo

The case is amd approved but the p/s isn't?? Why would AMD recommend/approve a metal box??
My experience has been: about 14 cheap boxes w/cheap\generic p/s's and 0 bad mobos.
Of course, I'm not running them in a server capacity either. I wouldn't be afraid of picking up a generic p/s. Only concern would be if it conked you would have a hard time returning it...
And now with the newfangled voltage monitoring/warning that these mobos have... didn't have those back in the day Sonny! Had to break out the ole Simpson analogue multimeter...
I would only recommend a "name brand" p/s if you were going to have the box up 24/7 and depended ($$) on it.

Well, I have two responses. A question and a comment.
First, I have heard that although many 300W power supplies are recommended and approved by AMD, if you are running anything 900Mhz or faster, you will need a 400W AMD approved power supply. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that?
Second, I know about the computer show in Pomona, and most of the people running booths in that computer show are regular merchants who have businesses in the greater L.A. area. So, if you have problems with a component, it probably won't be that far of a drive in order to replace the part or refund your money.
Yeah, I got an IBM HD and, as it turned out, there were a bunch of bad sectors on it. I went to the retail store named on the receipt and they exchanged it in a heartbeat. I was very pleased. The store was on Beach in Westminster... I think. It was about 5-6 months ago.

Thanks for the input....a 300w power dupply is sufficient for a 1 gig AMD anything higher, then you might have to look for a 300w+ power supply. And you definitely need it if your gonna overclock.
Would a 250w suffice for an Athlon 600?
250w will do for a 600. check amd's website for recommended power sup.
