PCMCIA difficulties

I have a 3Com-Megahertz 10 Mbps LAN + 56K XJACK Modem PC Card, and a Gateway Solo 1100, both brand spanking new; my question is when ever the card is inserted, upon booting up or hardware detection, the computer makes a fatal error bleep and freezes indefinatley. I had 3com attempt to help and Gateway also. I disabled memory modes, tried either PCMCIA slot, installing it before I had the card in, and basically messed around with settings. I have the computer at original configuration and a new card from 3Com, if anyone can come up with anything it would be appreciated.

what kind of o/s are you running?

I have tried to delete all .infs and it still continues pnp install, I believe the card works in win2k but that is not an option, since I own no more site licences
