Wireless Access Point

I want to run some internet camera's up to my barn it is about 600ft away and up on a hill.

what would be the best way to get ethernet up there for the cameras (i dont have the camera's yet either.

if i did it wireless how many Access points would i need?

how much signal would i loose with the leaves on the tree's

would it be possable to just run cat 5 cable up there or is that too far of a run?

Too far for CAT5 - wireless would be best, with a hefty antenna or a cantenna, like Airen suggests. Be sure to look for a WAP with removable antennas.

Also will want a WAP that you can hack. Try to get a linux based Linksys that you can load up with different firmware and boost the power from about 20mw to about 250mw.

can you hack any of the D link usits i have a DI-524

and what about making my own antenna if i had a big antean would it be about to go through tree limbs and leafs if so how far u think i could send the signal?

No problem getting through leaves & crap - with a big enough antenna, you can send the signal for miles.

I *highly* recommend that you scan ebay for a 3Com 8000 series WAP. They're the business versions, so fully upgradable, you can boost the power, removable antennas, nice easy user interface, etc. They retail for about $250-450, but regularly go for about $20 on ebay becase they're not the Linksys that everyone sees at Best Buy.

The 8000 is not upgradable to G - if you want G, look for the 8250 or 8750. Little bit harder to find, but if you're patient you can still get it for crazy cheap.

is it possable to use a DI-525 0r DI-624 as a wireless accesspoint that does not have to be connected to a cat 5 cable after it is connected???

I'm not quite sure what you mean...

You can use a device called a wireless bridge to connect a WAP to another WAP, but that's about the only wireless to wireless connection you can make (other than WAP to PC, of course).

What are you trying to do?

DI-525 0r DI-624 are Routers it is possable to use a router as a access point (repeter) to extend the range of my wireless Net with out having to leave the router connected via CAt 5

Ah, I see.

Typically no, you can't. You need a wireless bridge to do this. Some home routers advertise that they can also function as a bridge, but I've never actually seen one work.

However, to get back to pimpin' my favorite home wireless products that are really intended for businesses, have a look at ebay for 3Com wireless bridges - http://search.ebay.com/search/search...rclo=&saprchi=

They're out there, and they're cheap.

then i call d-link to find the scoop on how it will work cause it had conflicting info in the manual. so i am going to try and bid on another one i think and maybe use it in bridge mode to anothere wireless ap i dont know i have called D-link and Airlink and most of their products will only do one hop wireless ex router to AP(repeter) but will not go router> long distance> AP(repeter) <long distance> AP (repeter) ... is there not a product that will do this. how do ppl get a wide coverage aria with these things ........ is there not a Cheap way do so this

I was thinking Router (AP in Bridge mode) to AP (bridge mode to Wireless Router or AP to anothere AP in Bridge mode maybe

and those range extenders from dlink will only do one hop too as well as the universal range extendres from air link..

and those 3com g units on e-bay they want crazy mad money for them.

any advice wold be apprecieated. i am building a Antenna now for my router AP when i get them and i am going to see how close i can get to where i need
