I have been getting more and more books on CD from the library and putting them on my MP3 player to listen to while I work out. Is this legal? Am I allowed to do so if I delete it around the same time I return the CD?

I'm not sure of the legal implications, but I'm sure that the RIAA would say ABSOLUTELY NOT!![]()
What's interesting is that our library also checks out software. For a number of years I could check out TurboTax and use it to do my tax returns. (I'm sure that more recent versions that require online activation using the registration key would prevent multiple uses.) They still (as far as I know) have some software available for lending (some educational games, etc.).

I would say "and i am no lawyer" that techincally you are making multiple copies and not for the sake of having a backup, instead you are creating a situation where two people could possibly be using 1 copy of a book at 1 time and thus i would think you would get in trouble for it. The fact that you delete it probably makes it less offensive but my guess is its quickly becoming the one copy means one copy.![]()

Sounds innocent enough, but probably not. Incidents like this, though...I wouldn't worry about them if I were you.Originally Posted by cheapie

You want to do the right thing morally or legally? If you want to be horribly strict legally, then don't do it. Morally I think you're fine. You checked out the CD. They expect you to listen to it. You're just changing the medium over which you're listening to it, no biggie.
I agree with Cubsfan. You are totally within the spirit of using one copy for yourself. If you checked out the book, made the copy and took it right back, and then kept the copy for a long time... I would say that was shady for sure. But you are holding possesion of the copy and the orginial and then deleting the copy...
Most music sites "that a buddy of mine surfs around" talk about having a 24 hour trial period and then either buying the album or deleting the file.. And i am pretty sure that is the legal protection they need so i imagine that you are fitting into that column... i think.
besides, unless you are running around town proclaiming "I stole harry Potter from my library" I am almost positive that no one will even blink twice that you are doing what you are doing. There are far more people willingly and happily breaking the law with no intent or consideration for doing it the right way like you are.
