    Haggling and Tiffany's

Anyone know if you can haggle the prices down at Tiffany's?

My experience with them is extremely limited.

I doubt you're going to be able to haggle with ANY jewelry retailer. The industry is practically a command economy.

I agree. It's like going to Sears or Walmart and trying to haggle over the price. The prices in these stores are set and the sales people really do not have the liberty to lower the prices.

On that note, you might have better luck with a wholesaler or running around your jewelry district (in a major city)

Haggling is often welcome at small independent jewelry stores...but not Tiffany's. They have a firm policy and will not negotiate. Someone's gettin' a ritzy Christmas present!

I had a friend that bought a pricey necklace from them and got charged "no tax". You can try to ask for that. I think Ben Bridge does the same thing as well.

That's not true. I've haggled 4 out of the 5 retail jewelers I bought from. The only one I wasn't able to swing was Helsberg.

The trick is figuring out where the extreme markup is and comparing that with the stuff that's having trouble selling.

True, you can't haggle Sears, but I was able to get a $1200mattress for under $1000 at a mattress store.

Some places play, some don't. I was just wondering if anyone here knew one way or the other. I absolutely hate paying for more than I have to.

If you're talkin' about the Tiffany who works the corner at 1st and Main, it really helps if you buy her a cheap bottle of booze. Then she'll haggle aaaaaall niiiiight loooooong.

Aside from Nappy's comments, the general rule is, if you don't ask, they won't offer. It never hurts to ask...

I thought most retail jewelers will haggle over prices. I guess I'm thinking more like the mall type shops. They definitely haggle.

What I'd suggest is finding a private seller who you feel comfortable with and can establish a good relationship with. They'll give you MUCH better quality gems at prices the stores won't even come close to.

I don't think the price at Tiffany is negotiable and don't know what's good about their jewelries...

I remember years ago when a local nationally-recognized shipbuilding company (now owned by N.G.) was building a stealth Corvette class warship for the Israelis. The Israelis in town for the details bought cars, of course, but they would walk into, say, a Lexus dealer, say "I like this car," and offer 1/2 asking price. They got good deals, but I can't imagine walking into, say, a Porsche dealership, eyeing a new Carerra or Cayman at 55-60k and offering 25-30.

sad to say I am one of them - although - I can honestly say I have never gotten anything from Tiffany's before. I would like to have something just to see why everyone goes ooohs and ahhs over it..
