Thread: Help, I erased my HD and cannot get CD to work

  1. #1
Ok, I an not a technical person. Although I like to pretend I am on occassion.

I installed a new hard drive on my p233mmx. All was going well. I then moved data files from the old drive to the new drive. I was going to reformat the old drive. Load win 98 to the new drive.

My old HD had 2 partitions (C: & D:). I reformated the D: drive and wiped out windows 95. I went through the reformat of my (C & D). I have a system disk that I created from a bios upgrade. I booted using that and copied basic dos files to c:/dos(had help with this). I still cannot get the CDrom to recognize to load win98.

What do I have to do to get my cd working property. I cannot find and cd drivers. As a last ditch effort I reinstalled win 3.1. Still no go.

Currently, I have one hard drive(partitioned C: & D:) I have a dos directory with basis dos tools. And I loaded windows 3.1.

Please help point me in the right direction.

    Thanks

Get your hands on a win98 boot disk, boot with that disk and it will load generic drivers for your cd-rom.

Thanks for the reply. I made a bootdisk from bootdisk.com How come I don't see mscdex on it? Is there some new version of it on a win98 boot disk.

    ?!?!?!?!
If you make a win98 startup disk (or called something like that) it will have the cd drivers on them. and version of win 98 will do this. if you just format /s it, it won't work!
So, the moral of the story is: go to a damn win98 box and tell it to make a startup disk!

Because mscdex is not used any longer, that's a hold over from 3.1/95. 98 has generic drivers that will run most CD roms.

mscdex is available on win98 boxes either in the c:\windows or c:\windows\command directories. In addition to needing it on a boot disc, you'll need to use it if you exit windows to dos mode and need cd-rom access
