This really should probably go in GotDeals

    http://worldofwork.ueuo.com/alaska.html

A small town in alaska is giving away plots (1.3acres) of land to entice people to move there. The town has 300 people, no crime, no traffic, and NO grocery store.

You have a $500 refundable deposit and 2 years to build a 1,000 sq ft house on the property.

Hey it gets in the 90s in the summer. Im tempted to apply for one. I could startup an ISP possibly, go there in the summers to checkup and maintian hardware but otherwise telecommute issues from here in NYC.

Not a bad idea job wise, but why get the land then? Are you thinking the property will appreciate in value?

It's a good offer, but I don't see how this fits most people. I'd imagine the job market is next to non-existent up there. Might be good for a retiree, maybe as a vacation property (summertime only).

How about building a 1000 sq. ft. house above a grocery store?

well it wouldnt fit most people, which is why they are offering 26 plots only. They are also looking to enhance the community, so if i told them id only vacation there they probably wouldnt be too happy.

Well I was talking this over with Mrs. Kevster, and it seems like it might not be that wiener-friendly, with all the bears running about. But still, I must admit it did pique my interest.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

Probably going to be a pretty good job market in house construction for a couple of years

Meh, I dunno. I guess if you already lived there. But they're only going to be building ~26 (unless someone wants to cram more than one onto their lot).

You could pick up Lindsay Lohan for less than a intel 990x, and still have money left over to bail her outta jail

And what's an occasional day of 60-below cold in a town removed from big-city ills

We could combine all of our 1.3 acre plots and build a nice hunting lodge.

There are actually a *lot* of places like this in the US.

A quick google turned up this one in kansas: http://mysite.eaglecom.net/welcomeho...s/page0002.htm
