    64 GB USB drive

I saw a 16 GB drive for $99 AR at Fry's, and was surprised that there were even 16 GB's for sale.

Then I saw this one for $5000:

    DAYUM!

But if this thread gets dug out of the grave a few years from now, I hope we can laugh at how big we thought these things were

A brief Google search shows that a Kanguru 64 GB FLash drive (not a mini hard drive) is around $2700.

I can't with til the prices on these drives come down so they can start using them in laptops and such.

I personally wouldn't trust one to last more than 5 minutes. I've had several die on me, so I'd never use one for backup purposes.

Which brands have you had die?

Pretty much I've trusted SanDisk and Lexar brand flash drives... which have taken quite a beating in my pocket.

But I do agree... I would not use a flash drive key as a "permanent backup storage" option. Over time, they will break, however some of these units are better than other and depending on the manufactuer they come with varying lengths of warranty if they should fail.

I haven't had any problems with flash drives, and they have been multiple brands.

I only had an issue with one flash drive (Sandisk Cruzer Mini 1GB), but I still believe it was due to a faulty USB port (port would randomly disconnect for no reason at all, and even rebooting the machine wouldn't fix it half the time. Turned out it was traced to a faulty USB hub/cable). The whole filesystem was corrupt, and even a reformat wouldn't cure it.

My most recent casualty (which was last week) was a Sandisk Cruiser.

I have several 4GB drives from PQI, and I paid $30-$40 for each of them when they were on sale at Fry's. I can only speculate on where we'll be in a year, probably with 16GB ones regularly at that price by then. We could probably see the 32GB ones down to $100 in 18 months, who knows?

And the light that fills the world.
