I am the Way And the Lightswitch

It rained the other night, with some thunder action.

Naturally, the dog flipped out and started crying and following me around. She also does this when the heat from the shower in the bathroom makes the smoke detector chirpy.

I used to think she just came to me because she sees me as the alpha male. I mean, mostly, she is my wife’s dog. She follows her around, cuddles her, gets pissy when she isn’t getting attention from her. Me, she only bothers when she is scared, or needs to go outside.

I started thinking about it though, and that’s not really correct behavior. The alpha dog is the leader, but you don’t run to him when you are being a big baby. Especially if the alpha dog gets all pissy because you are chomping at his heals and crying.

She doesn’t see me as the alpha. She thinks I’m God. She thinks I’m causing the storms and if she just cries enough, I’ll turn them off.

It makes sense. I turn off the lights in the house. My wife sure doesn’t. I close the doors. I shoo and rage and thunder. I also control all sandwiches in the morning. I dish out the punishment. I’m a vengeful deity, who must be pleased and feared.

My wife is mom to her. But I’m Shiva, destroyer of worlds, who won’t share his damn roastbeef and brings down the thunder.

    Stupid dog.

You may be onto something regarding animal's reaction to thunder. They may see you as causing it. I never thought of that.

it drives me nuts. I am completely ignored until the noise starts, then it is constant crying and I swear, begging for me to stop it. She wont' take comfort.
