    Shifty Nigerian Internet Satellite launched

guess they ran out of local bandwidth for email

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6653067.stm

It gives you bandwidth to enable you to communicate from point A to point B, from rural Africa to urban cities," Dr Bashir Gwandu, a member of the Satellite Launch Committee and a director at the Nigeria Communications Commission told the BBC's Focus on Africa.

I already get enough spam...why would anyone bid to put a satellite up there for them?

What in the world. Is Nigeria super wealthy? Does this actually help everyone? This and the 100 dollar computers worry me, because we are trying to push people from the 1800's up to 2100 over night. Not that we should hold them back if they are ready, but i think this force feeding people technology so we can make a profit is really bad. I think it only promotes a gap between the haves and have nots and it does nothing to solve problems like starvation and disease.
but maybe i'm all wrong and perhaps you can google how not to starve.

nigeria has tremendous potential. they have a ton of oil but have been raped repeatedly by their leadership. add in muslim clergy trying to move the country in a non-secular direction and you have problems.

my wife's family lived in nigeria for decades. her dad and g'pa were both born there. it's a sad story. great people but just a perpetual line of thieves for leaders.

Actually the article directly addresses your feelings:
Critics say the majority of the population live in poverty and the internet can be made redundant by the simple fact that electricity is sporadic at best.

The government should rather spend all this money on power, job creation and basic public services, they say.
Random fact to add: The spell checker built into this forum does not have the word "internet" in the dictionary by default!!!

I think that later versions of Firefox do not need the Spell Check addon - it is built into the browser (for input windows) and I think on by default (Tools/Options/Advanced->General "Check my spelling as I type".

Incidentally, my version doesn't complain about "internet" (and I don't think I've added it to my dictionary.

I'm talking about the *forum* spell check.

Look at the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. In the upper right hand corner (just above where you type) there is a button with "ABC" and a check mark. That is what I use.

    There is no such button...

...until you use IE instead of Firefox.
