thanks!

Just spotted this thread- don't often read this one. DSLR bodies are rarely discounted- at least by reputable dealers. Believe it or not, Dell now handles more cameras than they used to- and do have discounts from time to time. Do they still sell discount coupons on EBay?
Nikon D80: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=A1116227
An excellent place to shop is B+H Photo http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
Excellent selection and service. I have used both Dell and B+H. Memory cards I get from NewEgg.
I add new pictures to my photo gallery pretty regularly. You can see them here if you are interested: http://www.pbase.com/jeffryz
If he's not stuck on Nikon, also have him look for the Canon Rebel XT. It's nearing the end of its retail life, and there are a few places starting to discount it. There also seems to be a HUGE glut of them on ebay these days.
thanks guys, but too late.
I was leaning toward the D80 for my friend since she had some nikon equipment already and the D40 only autofocuses with newer AF-S lenses. However, her old stuff was pretty low end so we just went with the D40. We got a good deal on newegg. The price for the body + 18-55 lens kit (including a free 1GB card) was $100 cheaper than B+H. We pay tax for B+H here in NY.
Speaking of which, if you guys ever come visit NYC, you must visit the B+H superstore. It's probably one of the most fascinating stores in NY. They have pretty much any type of camera/electronic equipment you could imagine crammed into a store only a fraction of the size of a typical best buy, citcuit city, etc, complete with a custom conveyor track system on the ceiling which automatically retrieves items from the storage room when you request it. Best part: all the 100+ employees are hasidic jews.
