Thread: Why? What for? What do you think?

Why? What for? What do you think?

Basically, what do you think the point to life is?
Odds are you will contribute little to nothing to the world, and will just be a breeder who hopefully doesnt screw up their offspring too much.

Depending on life expectancy after your grandkids or great grandkids you wont be remembered for anything or by anyone. At best you will be an old photo or video and maybe they will remember your name.

Sorry if thats depressing, but does anyone have a better answer? Im guessing not, otherwise youd have a book on the best sellers list.

How many here are just going through the motions of what you are "supposed" to do? ie. goto school, get a job, find a mate, get a house, work for many years, retire, die.

Definitely doing the normal path thing here but I've really started to enjoy myself since maybe the 6th grade or so.

Whenever people ask me about the meaning of life I usually give them Zen's answer:

I don't matter in the scheme of things, most people don't - by which I mean nearly everybody.

God is my answer. I have meaning in, from, and through God.

i'm with shawn. i'm guessing that he means we were put here for a purpose by God. and since God finds value and purpose in our lives, then we should as well.

This life is a batteground for your soul. Satan owns it until you become born again. If you trust Jesus as your only means of salvation through his death on the cross, you will enter from the sonship of Satan to becoming one of God's children. You will then have eternal life from that moment.

Then you can become a messenger of God's gospel, if that's the life you decide to live through obedience to Him. Or you can squander the new life that he will give to you at that moment of conversion and receive few rewards in the next life.

You can't say there's no point and then proceed to tell us to enjoy life. Enjoying life then becomes the point.

I think you are wrong. I think that through family, you will be remembered past 2 gens back. Maybe not by name, but by traditions and by your actions. I know that there are traditions in our family that go back a while.

While, yes, I won't be remembered by droves of people around the world, I would hope I have made a difference in someone's life. Who knows, maybe that little act of kindness/charity/whatever will change a life enough to cause a bigger ripple in the world.

I really don't think there is a purpose to life but does there really need to be a purpose to life? I find the thought that nothing that I do now will matter in a couple hundred years actually pretty comforting. It takes a LOT of pressure off of me about screwing up.

And since when is Satan depicted as a prepubescent playing Call Of Duty or Halo?

A tradition might by chance live on, but will anyone realize it even is a tradition? Do you remember anything of your Great Great Grandparents? I at least have a family tree book for my Dad's side that goes back in detail for 4 or 5 gen, and about 7 for names, but not much for moms side.

Life's point is whatever you make it. Don't get too hung up on it. Do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do. Eh.

My g-g grandfather on my father's side was adopted. He ended up making "a lot" of money with a corn mill and oil investments. He left a lot of his estate to the orphanage that raised him down in AL.

I am still researching the others. I am working on my tree. I am still a novice, but it's a work in progress.

fawker, i just spit 151 on my monitor.....

who can truly say that there is actually a 'meaning' to life...say God and you seem a)self centered(in that you believe that YOU have a SPECIFIC purpose and that only YOU will do it this way, i dunno, seems kinda stuck up to me) or b)retarded because you can't think for yourself. or you can say that we have no purpose, we just ARE.

those to me seem to be the extremes and while i personally believe more towards the latter, i can also see a middle ground where we will have some sort of impact on someone at some point that will alter things in the future(i shook the hand that shook the hand, ect...)

but who is to say that there is or isn't a God, or higher being pulling our puppet strings. we'll never know until we actually die and do one of 3 things. rot, goto 'heaven' or 'hell', be reincarnated.

i like to fancy myself a thinking man(when was the last time you heard a delivery driver say that without winking) and believe that there is NOT a higher power, that we make our own destiny and purpose. yes, there are circumstances beyond our control that will directly shape who/what we are(a death in the family, a good experience) but we also control how we react to those depending on 1)NURTURE(gawd i hate the nature/nurture argument, i think its more nurture with a little nature) 2)our own personal philosophies on life, death, how we react to problems(humor, withdrawal, denial, ect...) but i think there is too much evidence that point to the lack of a 'God'. condemn me if you wish, i personally don't care, i won't begrudge you as long as you don't try and MAKE me see your point of view, i'll discuss it on civil terms with you, and have no problem sharing ideas, seeing new view points and gaining understanding, but as soon as you start pushing your beliefs on me, you drop more than a few rungs on my respect ladder.

i'm an atheist. and i don't see what will make me change. and i went to a christian college(and was atheist before that) one of the biggest reasons being that i was a history major, and so much of modern(since 1 AD) history is centered around europe and its evolution, which became, ultimately, a christian peninsula. but i lost more than one friend because they told me that i was going to hell for not believing in 'God' and that 'God' was the ONLY way....pardon me, but that screams close mind and stuck up to me. i have no problem that you believe different than me...by all means, lets sti down over lunch, just the two of us, and discuss our differences and learn from one another...for example, i would absolutely love to sit down with DF and talk with him about his experiences about being black and also share some of my stories and experiences and learn from each other. some of the people i consider my brothers and sisters share very different religions/beliefs from me, yet we still agree to disagree and don't thnk less/hold a grudge because we aren't carbon copies who a)all read from the same book and consider it the blue print for life, or b)shun the book and its believers and shun them...

ok, i haven't typed that much in YEARS here....i need a drink.

Each religion has got their own way of making you feel like a victim. The Christians say 'you are a sinner', and you better just zip up your trousers and give the money to the pope and we'll give you a room up in the hotel in the sky.

Maybe the point of life is to entertain the higher power. Having nothing around is certainly boring, so it seems like a better alternative when you can fill the void with more void (mostly MTV I mean.)
