San Diego County Fair Photography Results

OK- tooting my own horn here.

Last year, I sent in six phots to the fair and got three exhibited and won two honorable mention ribbons. Out of about 3,500 entries only about 1,00 got shown- less than one in three so getting half in was pretty good. If you have looked at the photos at the fair the last couple of years you would have seen some really high quality shots all over the place. Choosing a best would have been extremely hard so I was very pleased with the Honorable Mentions.

This year, again six entries with three selected to be shown. Two more Honorable Mentions.

"It's Coming"- an infrared shot of the Point Loma Lighthouse was one of the HMs. It was in the Black and White Scenic category.

The second was this shot at the Torrey Pines Glider Port in the Summer Sports (the theme of this year's fair) category. Also shot in infrared.

Then there is this one. No Honorable Mention. I had troubles finding it at the Fair. Then I looked up at some of the winners on my way by. Wow! There it is! Is that really mine? And it has a Blue Ribbon next to it! Top prize in the Black and White Nature category! Another infrared shot. All three were taken with a point and shoot six megapixel camera. Pretty darn good I'd say! Far better than I could have expected. I did try to hedge my bets a bit by picking less popluar categories and it certainly worked!
    Here is the winning shot:
"Zebra Play" taken at the San Diego Zoo. When you walk into the room with the photograpny, they have a big wall of all the winners in front of the doorway. Mine is the top left corner. I took shots at the fair of course and am still editing them. I went up on opening day.

I like that the lighthouse looks like it's burping the clouds and blowing down the tree

    Congrats Zippy!

Well, you know what they say - it's what's behind the camera that makes the great shots. Way to go!

Thanks everybody! I now have a higher standard to shoot for.
Entering less popular categories helped too. I stayed out of the color scenic and color nature categories on purpose- too many other entries in them and harder to win. the infrared works great for black and white. Plus I just like it because it is different.

I should have the pics I took at the fair up in my gallery shortly.

Saw your pics at the fair, zippy. Congrats, again. I had to vote the light house as my favorite.

The workers at the fair seem to have a power trip or something going on. One woman there jumped all over me accusing me of touching the photos as I was using my voting slip to point out your photo to my brother and explain to him that it was a partly cloudy day and in infrared, the photo looks like a stormy day. I never even came close to the pictures.

But, anyway, she ruined my viewing pleasure so I left after my vote. Bummer.

    Again, congrats. and good job.

I apreciate that they are protective of the pictures at the fair. We don't like dust, dirt or fingerprints on them. I also apreciate your vote and for showing off the pictures! Most of the pictures were also available for sale- mine were (I will keep the winning zebras shot!).

    You're welcome.

I would also appreciate that they are protective. I'm sure that some work hard to get the best captures, just know the difference between someone who is actually touching, and someone who is interested and merely pointing out detail without the touch.

Anyway, lots of really nice pictures entered. Another of my faves there was the Orion Nebula shot. Amazing colors. I did get to see all of the pics. Some really nice B&Ws. Oh, I really liked the baby on the football, too cute.

For those who did not see the picture, the baby was no bigger than the football was.
There were lots of pictures- many of which could have been winners. And 1000 is a lot to look through.

cool congrats. I didn't go to the Fair this year, as I have now moved from SD. But it was always interesting and fun to look at the photography.

(being able to post again is also awesome, NOTE: Do not try to change your Email address in your profile right now. )
