OK- tooting my own horn here.
Last year, I sent in six phots to the fair and got three exhibited and won two honorable mention ribbons. Out of about 3,500 entries only about 1,00 got shown- less than one in three so getting half in was pretty good. If you have looked at the photos at the fair the last couple of years you would have seen some really high quality shots all over the place. Choosing a best would have been extremely hard so I was very pleased with the Honorable Mentions.
This year, again six entries with three selected to be shown. Two more Honorable Mentions.
"It's Coming"- an infrared shot of the Point Loma Lighthouse was one of the HMs. It was in the Black and White Scenic category.
The second was this shot at the Torrey Pines Glider Port in the Summer Sports (the theme of this year's fair) category. Also shot in infrared.
Then there is this one. No Honorable Mention. I had troubles finding it at the Fair. Then I looked up at some of the winners on my way by. Wow! There it is! Is that really mine? And it has a Blue Ribbon next to it! Top prize in the Black and White Nature category! Another infrared shot. All three were taken with a point and shoot six megapixel camera. Pretty darn good I'd say! Far better than I could have expected. I did try to hedge my bets a bit by picking less popluar categories and it certainly worked!
Here is the winning shot:
"Zebra Play" taken at the San Diego Zoo. When you walk into the room with the photograpny, they have a big wall of all the winners in front of the doorway. Mine is the top left corner. I took shots at the fair of course and am still editing them. I went up on opening day.
