My new favorite TV show: How I Met Your Mother

From the title of the show I was expecting a lame family sitcom in the genre of 8 Simple Rules. In those shows, I could never really get behind the same stale humor of how teenagers are rebellious, married men are fat crude and lazy, or the character who says dumb things in an attempt to make us laugh. To my surprise, How I Met Your Mother is a show that follows characters not so old that they are static but too old for teenage Dawson's Creek "he loves me, he loves me not" drama

The show takes an in media res perspective on the lives of a group of character in their mid to late 20s. The characters share a strong, close friendship but yet live very different lives much like Friends. The show never dwells too long on the drama and decisions that steer these character's lives. There is a constant play between characters trying to avoid the box society constructs for them and the way the characters simultaneously succumb and defeat that box.

Did I mention that with this show you also get Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan? Those two are good actors and pretty good comedians. Alyson plays her character quirky of course but with more depth and more dimensions. Neil plays a character that doesn't want to grow up but isn't stupid about it. I don't too frequently laugh out loud at a show but this show pulls it off. It's definitely fresh, creative, and well paced.

hahaha. I LOVE this show. i've been adicted from the very beginning.

I'm convinced I'm Ted. And I have other friends who are all the other characters.

and all the stuff, is sooo true. With the yelling chain, I realized that I had just yelled at my gf, and i got yelled at from someone else. it cracked me up when I saw the episode, and had to apologize to my gf. =)

I'll agree with nearly everything you said about this show, except this...
...but too old for teenage Dawson's Creek "he loves me, he loves me not" drama.
Eh - gotta nit-pick, but that's the whole point of this show! I mean, sure, it's often just a plot device used to squeeze episodes out of these characters, but it's a pretty important one at that.

    But yeah, awesome show.

I admit, I watched Dawson's Creek. It was very interesting in the early seasons but the wannabees (One Tree Hill) and the later episodes were monotonous. At some point you just want to throw the TV across the room and say "get over it, you're not the center of the universe, this is not as big of a deal as you are making it out to be"

This is one of the best shows on TV. I love everything about it. the writing is great the references are hilarious, and the characters are just amazing. I picked up Season 1 on DVD at BB for $14 during Xmas, and found Season 2 in the same bin, but apparently it wasn't on sale, bt the cashier gave it to me for the same price.

The other day I had 7 Japanese business men at my work, and I declared that "I am an international business man".
Peter: Lois, you've got a sick mind!
Lois: Peter, I'm talking about making love.
Peter: Oh, I thought you wanted us to murder the children and harvest their organs for beer money.
