His goal was 8 wasn't it?
I think he'll fall just short with 7.
I would say 7 also.

His performance has been pretty amazing. He is swimming a lot of races and still dominating all of them. The problem is that with the drugs in sports controversies is that we may question any performances which seem to be too amazing. Nobody has raised that question with Phelps yet, but some may start to wonder. Has that tainted our ability to admire sports- or did we admire them too much in the past?

phelps volunteered his body to be studied by scientist on whether or not he's using performance drugs. He is very open about what he puts in his body and has nothing to hide. I think he's ballzy for that move and very noble. he's gonna take it all!

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Not that I am condoning what he did but it only happened once, right? Maybe I am reading into it but it seems like you are saying that he does it regularly.Originally Posted by attgig

On another note and sort of related to phelps, if we keep dominating the olympics will they eventually drop all sports or just ban us from competition? (looking at you softball and baseball)
Thesifer - I agree with you on Phelps. If he was a habitual offender like some of the other loser celebs that we know then it would be fine to beat him up for it. He screwed up once, so give him a break.
I am not sure we are really dominating the Olympics. The Chinese have way more golds than us. We have a greater number of medals compared to any other country but the Chinese have the most golds. Granted, they also have 13 year old kids winning golds because they are competing despite the rules. The IOC is a joke because they do nothing about it.
What a disappointment - he didn't set his seventh world record.Originally Posted by guiseppewv

it is sad it wasn't a world record. but it was a Olympic record.Originally Posted by Markel

The Serbian delegation filed a protest, but conceded that Phelps won after reviewing the tape provided by FINA, swimming's governing body. USA Swimming spokeswoman Jamie Olson said the tape was slowed to one frame every 10-thousandth of a second to make sure Phelps actually touched first.
It was impossible to tell on regular-speed replays.
"We filed the protest but it is already over," said Branislav Jevtic, Serbia's chief of mission for all sports. "They examined the video and I think the case is closed. The video says (Phelps) finished first.
"In my opinion, it's not right, but we must follow the rules. Everybody saw what happened."
FINA referee Ben Ekumbo of Kenya said there was no doubt who won after a review of the super-slow replay.
"It was very clear that the Serbian swimmer touched second after Michael Phelps," he said. "One was stroking and one was gliding."So, in one sentence he admits that the video showed that Phelps won and in the next sentence he says it isn't right?
I am hoping there was just something lost in translation.

I think he might have been saying something like normally you would both be reaching, and phelps was in the middle of a stride when he touched, in essence maybe that he could have lost his bearings in the pool so therefore shouldn't be the man on top? That's all I can get out of it. But in reality, I think it's more Phelps hates the short swims, he has the fish advantage in the long swims.
In essence they both screwed up and were in between strokes. Phelps went with the half stroke to win while the other guy stretched out for it and ended up taking a fraction of a second longer.Originally Posted by Thesifer
It made for great entertainment whatever the result. Hopefully tonight's race ends up being another close one.

I just saw Michael pull off his 8th. What an inspiration! The race was great to watch and it was cool to see Lezak (sp) as the anchor again. Congrats Michael - you're the man!!
Wait a second... you're telling me Sixpac Shakur is a CHICK?
NBC used some underwater stop action shots of the finish of the questionable race and he did just beat the other guy.
It is amazing how high Phelps set our expectations- where we were "disappointed" that he did not set a world record in one of eight races in a week. He swam more races than the people he was racing against so they should have been fresher. An incredible performance.
