Can't get .pps file when emailed to open easily

I have a friend who emails to me .pps files meant to be opened in Powerpoint. When it's downloaded, I right click and choose open but it does nothing. The only way I can open it is to manually open Microsoft Powerpoint, in Powerpoint, go to file, open and find the downloaded file. At that point it runs fine but it is cumbersome to open. How can I get the files with that .pps extenuation to open automatically? So far I went to Control Panel> Default Programs and .pps files are correctly defaulted.

Is the File Association set as shown below in Folder Options?

I have Vista, do you mean "Folder Options" that is in "Control Panel"? It doesn't look like your example. I go to Control Panel, then Folder Options, I only have three tabs, General, View & Search. There is no option there for "File Types". The closest I can find for associating file types to programs is in Control Panel>Default programs> "Associate file type with a program" and extention .pps says "Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer"
Where can I find Folder Options as in your example, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

When I right click and click "open with" there is no choice for Powerpoint. At that point, I choose Browse and locate Powerpoint but when I do that, nothing happens. Maybe if I can get Powerpoint to be included in the "Choose Helper Application" than I can choose "open with" and maybe it would work. But I can't figure out how to include Powerpoint as on of the choices.
