"...You(r) calls are channeled through other ooma hubs (to their landlines)...
Since ooma uses P2P technology for call termination, users are more exposed to potential security risks"...

    update from ooma's website ...

"Just a FYI -- ooma is not routing calls over other user's landlines (e.g. Distributed Termination).
Any mention of this was removed from the user T&C's and the ooma website from the website a few months ago.
The original intent of this "people-powered" network was to save costs with calling.
Unfortunately it lent itself to be a poor user experience due to the fact we needed to block the outgoing caller-ID (e.g. a call going over another user's landline would show as "unknown" as the caller-ID instead of the caller's true name).
Also, our business plan went through a couple revisions last year (starting with separating out enhanced features -- ooma Premier -- from the core service features and further recognizing calling economies of scale).
As a result, we are able to continue to offer free phone service as a sustainable and scalable business."

    My Ooma experience...

Had Ooma since it began in beta. It has had a few bumps but it has been great for me. I would highly recommend it. I have all the features with no monthly fees because it used to be more expensive and that included Premier for life. Now it is cheaper but if you opt for more features there is a monthly fee and it's well worth it. I love the 2nd phone line, ability to get voice mail online. I live in NJ, my in laws are in NH. I created a local NH number for them, now they call us daily instead of only calling when someone dies. If you don't want or need Premier features, I still think $199 for life of unit is cheap for no monthly fees.
Their support is good but expect a long wait for support.
