A metal gear game would need to fit into the equation somewhere. Perhaps a category for best series.

Halo. Yeah, I was a Halo junkie. Big time. Halo parties and everything. That game changed the way games were made the same way GTA did (NOT a GTA fan at all, but I appreciate its impact on the gaming world).

Also, Quake II rocked my world. Online gaming became the best kind of gaming after I played Quake II online. After that playing a PS2 game against the computer seemed kinda lame.

Golden Eye? that really changed the multiplayer shooting game genre
...on console.
If GoldenEye had been released for the PC instead of the N64, I don't think it would have had nearly the same praise as it did on the console.

Todays Console- Call of Duty 4 <-when released in 2007 the number of people online was crazy. Still a lot playing, including me.
Toy Commander -Sega Dreamcast. Great game.
If we are including console games resident evil 4 was great.
HALO was pretty spectacular and still has my attention.
I still haven't played God of War... I hear good things about that...
