Pho Dac Biet, to be precise - especially on a chilly, rainy night...
Tried it for the first time last week. That Sriracha sauce is not only tasty, it is also better than high-fiber, too!

You never had Pho before or the first time at that place? I love Pho with the hot sauce and two limes. No sprouts or basil for me.
I was a Pho virgin until 10/14/2009. Did the sprouts and a little Basil, and a lime wedge. Also the Sriracha sauce. Will the forumOriginally Posted by mcs328

Guess not...
Tasty stuff - damned if it doesn't "clean like a white tornado" a la Ajax, though...

I love that stuff. When I lived in HI I went to a place in Waikiki at least once a week for Pho Tai. The chef, a lady who owns and runs the shop, was like my mom away from home. Her prices were awesome for Waikiki and HI in general. She had the best broth. I always went sans hoisin and sriracha sauces when ate at her restaurant b/c her broth was awesome and it was MSG free. She was very proud of her broth. Unfortunately, her broth spoiled me and I have not found a place in DC that comes close to her Pho or the other Vietnamese dishes that she makes. If anyone is in the area or going to the Waikiki area, I can let you know the name of the place.
I think I am going to get some Pho for lunch today.![]()
Any English translations?
*** Ok, so it's a soupy noodle thing?

It is usually a beef based broth (although, I have seen Pho Ga [chicken based broth] and Vegetarian [blah!] based broth) with rice noodles, onion, and beef (you can usually choose the type of cut to a certain degree). You can then add lime, thai basil, hoisin, sriracha, and/or, sometimes, an asian herb that tastes very similar to cilantro (I don't know what it is called).
BTW - it is spelled pho with an umlaut over the "o" so the "o" is prounounced like an "a".
I like the Pho chains like Pho 75 which have a handful of places in the DC Metro area. I've had it at other places but it's not quite the same.Originally Posted by guiseppewv

I think it sounds like the o in love.
It's excellent on cold days and when I'm a little congested. Really outside the western gamut. I recommend getting it with beef on the rare side. It'll cook in the soup.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.
You are right about it not being an umlaut. I realized this when I went to the Pho place for lunch.Originally Posted by InfiniteNothing
I forgot to say that you can also add bean sprouts and peppers.
Around the DC area very few places will serve it with the meat raw on the side. In HI, I could get it that way everywhere I went.
It is pronounced like "fuh" like what the fu** minus the ck. I think there is a chain called "What the Pho" out West.
The Pho 75 down in Rosslyn, on Wilson Blvd, used to be my favorite until I lived in HI. I think I used to eat at Pho 75 at least once a week. The Pho in HI was definitely way better. The broth at Pho 75 is weak. I got way spoiled by the great Vietnamese food there. It ruined me. I suggest never trying Vietnamese food in HI that way you won't be spoiled too.Originally Posted by mcs328

Pho 75 will give you the meat rare if you ask for it. My co-workers asks for it rare all the time but it's not served on the side just in the middle on top of the pile.Originally Posted by guiseppewv
I brought a lunch today but maybe I should skip out for Pho instead since it's damn cold out today.
What Da Pho*?
Anyway I guess I am spoiled for living in SoCal since I don't like Pho*? all that much. There are way too many restaurants in Little Saigon with Pho*? as their specialty. Many places also have 50% off of a certain kind (ox tail, chicken, and etc).

plenty of play on words to be had with pho =)
guiseppewv, there's a good place in columbia, pho dat (another play on words) on snowden.
pho out on the west coast is plentiful and cheap.
a large bowl should cost you 5.50, and fill you up like mad.
I'll usually also get a side of summer rolls (the non-fried kind).
yummy.
Thanks for the tip! I am going to have to go there and check it out.
I agree. You should not pay more than $5.50 for a bowl of Pho on the mainland. A large bowl in Waikiki was $7.50 and that was cheap for a meal in Waikiki!
I have asked at the Pho 75 in Rosslyn and they either act like they don't know what I am talking about or they say they don't serve it that way. Must be b/c the crazy haole is asking for it.Originally Posted by mcs328

if anyone wants to go scuba diving in oahu or wants to learn who to scuba dive in oahu, PM me.
Go to the Royal Pearl on Ena near where Ena intersects with Hobron Lane. I was going to include a link from google maps but it is not showing up on there. I hope to he11 that she did not go out of business in the down economy. My taste buds are weeping at the thought that she might have went out of business.
Here is a link of the place: http://cheapplacestoeatinoahuhawaii....se-restaurant/
