Thread: Resurfacing tubs and surrounds?

    Resurfacing tubs and surrounds?

We are closing on a house on Friday and the bathrooms are original to the house. The tubs are good quality - just old and dated and worn. We tossed around removing and replacing the tubs in the two bathrooms on the main floor, but I just helped mom and dad remodel theirs - I am not mentally ready to do that again

I found Miracle Method through a DIY forum and it seems to be a good solution to the tubs. The surround is ceramic tile that we would also have done at the same time. We could even do the vanity counter in the MBath AND the kitchen counter (which is tile and formica) for less than the price of remodeling one bathroom.

Has anyone done something like this for a newer look?

do some checking on the contractor who is going to do the work .make sure they be around if a problem should arise. i have heard good and bad storys of people having there fixtures refaced.
im personally never done a refacing -my calls have all been to remodel a bathroom/shower or kitchen !

I would love to gut and remodel the baths and kitchen. But I want to wait a few years to make sure nothing else breaks in the house I just know as soon as I make something pretty and what I REALLY want, I will have to put a new roof on, or well, own the house

We do have to replace the shower in the bathroom in the basement- the door leaks and the plumber that came out to do work for the seller couldn't get it adjusted so it wouldn't. We will try to adjust it, but I don't like corner showers anyway so I will be looking at other options.

    Wanna see it?

This is a floorplan and pictures. If you click on a picture off the floor plan, you are not at the mercy of the auto play gallery.

After living in housing for 14 years and scrubbing other people's funk out of the facilities, I think resurfacing might be a good cheap way of buying me 5-10 years.

We've been thinking about resurfacing our two full baths, as they are both late 60's colors (kind of a pea green in one and a medium blue in the other). If you go ahead with this, I'd be very interested how it turns out.

I will let you know how it goes.

And yes, Cheapie, it is a great deck! We are wanting to put an outdoor kitchen just outside the bar area.

We are just waiting for the bank to send the closing paperwork - it is still sitting in the approved conditionally stage and it is driving me bonkers.

    I thought the same thing

Awesome house though. That lake looks like it might be fun

What? You don't like the yellow paint? It goes really well with the glow in the dark stars and planets that are stuck to the ceiling

We are in a good situation where we can take some time and get the cleaning and painting done before we have our stuff delivered. And right now, I am just worried about the main floor - the basement is going to take some work.

Whoa! I just realized that you are moving to Springfield. Welcome back to the Prairie State! (We should be passing pretty close to your neighborhood on our way to Quincy where our son is at college.)

I found an article mentioning that the two major players in the refinishing business are Miracle Method and Perma-Glaze. Unfortunately in your case, the only two Perma-Glaze franchisees in Illinois appear to be in the north Chicago suburbs.

Yep, Donnie has equipment in Quincy that his shop works on. He hasn't been assigned any of his own yet, but that will change after he gets out of this first class.

Oh, yeah. He retired from the AF in August with no job. In November, he got a job with the FAA. He is currently in OKC for school - which leaves me to start to move us again by myself... hmm. How does he always get out of this??

I just read the NSS thread. How are you doing?

I like, and used, some yellow paint in the kid's room but that's like electric mustard or something!

I didn't know you were headed back to IL too, I just assumed it was still out in OK.

    Welcome back!

Slowly getting better, but still a ways to go for full recovery.

But that didn't stop me from installing a new water heater last Saturday (with the help of my wife).

LOL Yeah, that is bright. The only thing I can think of is that someone told them paint it bright because there are no windows in that room and they took it to the max.

When Donnie got out, he applied for jobs in OK, IL, CA and NV. IL called first. Well, they called second, but the first job didn't pay as well as this one We have been back in Marissa since August. So, yeah. Thanks It will be good to be close enough yet still far enough away from the family.

It does look like a very nice layout - with the deck and the yard backing up to the lake - very nice!

And I agree, that yellow is a bit too much.

Well, it was an ordeal and I was Donnie's POA so I had to sign his name by my name as attorney in fact too many times. My wrists hurt for a while

The woman who we bought the house from is in Thailand. She went there after her husband passed away. Well her POA last Monday started having heart issues and had a triple bypass on Friday morning (closing). So the seller's realtor was the POA for the POA... And I thought signing Donnie's name was awful!

The home inspector told me and my realtor something interesting. He inspected the house a few years ago (we assume for the lady we purchased from). He started to remember the house when he was going through it for us. He went back to the office and found the old report and they made no repairs. Everything he found issue with was on the older report. Well, she fixed it before we bought it. I just can't believe that they bought it without having their seller fix any of issues.

I am going to get some quotes over the next few weeks for the resurfacing.

It could've been a few years ago, where the real estate market was ridiculous (dunno about that area, but everywhere else), and the buyer had to make all the concessions to get the house...

Well, we found a couple things that the inspector missed.

We knew at one point there was a leak in the master bath. We were told it was an old leak and had been fixed - we knew from the dry wall damage to the right of the tub.

Well, I took the shower doors off and took a couple tiles with it. The wall is gone - the grout was bad and still seeping water. Since this was pre- concrete board or other waterproofing/resistant construction, we are either going to put a new tub/surround in or rebuild and retile the wall in the master. Which means we will also NEED to do the kid's bath too. No resurfacing for us - I don't want mold.

The second was the washer and dryer closet/room. I ran a load of towels last weekend and noticed a small puddle between the machines. I didn't even pull them out.

Now, I get to decide if I want to add 18-24 inches to my washroom and redo the master bath, or do I want to keep the layout the same...

that may just be a water hose from the washer loose. the shower is a sucks - i have to rebuild my daughters in the master bathroom. in the home she just bought do to the same reason as you posted. are inspector did see the problems and made a note of it. so i was well aware of it before i got down there to see for myself !

Well, Donnie checked out the washer leak - and it was just the washer! :happydance: So, we put my washer in the closet - and it doesn't fit!!!

We need to move the dryer vent and all should be well with that issue. We can still move the wall between the bath and washroom, but I think we are going to sit for a bit before we move walls.

One of the guys on our fire department just bought a house... your "surprises" reminded me of his story. The previous homeowners were leaving a large chest deep freeze (which he was really happy with) until he found out WHY they were leaving it.

It was covering a HUGE hole in the wall that they knocked out to fix a leak in the bathroom.

    Woops!

Found a big white envelope at the house over the weekend with "Alex" written on the front.

It was a Valentine for the man who passed away.

What do I do with it?

I haven't told Audrey what I found - she would be holding court with Ghostbusters if I did!

Gonna start painting this weekend and going to bring the kitchen cabinets doors back to Marissa to sand down - the weekend just isn't long enough when it's cut short with school activities!

Gotta get the cabinets in shape before we have the rest of our stuff delivered.
