Snatching a domain as it becomes available.

A couple years ago I posted this question about wanting to get a domain that someone was squatting on. The WHOIS info showed that the domain will be expiring in February next year. I've been patiently waiting until now hoping that the owner will not renew the domain as it expires. Before, he had a place holder, and as of now it says his web hosting service has expired, so he doesn't even have that anymore. I'm hoping this is a sign that he has no interest in this domain and will let it expire without renewing.

Assuming that happens, what is the best way to be prepared to snatch it as it becomes available? Should I just try to buy it right after the expiration date? Or are there services (backordering, etc) that will do it for me?

I got lucky with a domain I really wanted late last year. It was already registered by some guy in Singapore, and on the parked domain, it was noted that people could make a bid via www.sedo.com . . . I bid the minimum ($60), it went into a public auction, and I won with the minimum bid.

I'm now working to build a company around it and will share with G|A when it's ready for beta.

Point being, it may make sense to try to buy directly from the owner. If there isn't going to be demand for the domain otherwise, his best option will be to just sell to you.

“Getting in on The Drop!" Are you kidding me? Who woulda guessed an article on domain names could be so exciting? I haven't been at the edge of my seat like that since watching inception. Super informative article I must say. Thanks! The domain name I'm looking for is really silly and obscure so I'm 100% sure I won't be up against any competition to get it. I may just wait for the grace period to end or go with snapnames to bid on it ($60) like Butch did, just to be safe, since the article mentions that snapnames have first shot at domains under network solutions, like the one I want.

true. but i'm guessing the article is somewhat focusing on very high-demand domains. if it's something obscure you're looking for it may not be that hard. still great information to have.
