    did social networking kill gotapex?

I linger from time to time...but I don't really post anymore. I miss the old days of ranting and raving about trivial topics. It was definitely good times.

so it got me thinking...did social networking kill gotapex?

I'm not too sure why I actually have the site in my bookmarks folder (though I admit to reading the news page each day to see if lpmiller says anything crazy about the French or something) LOL!

Maybe I'm just waiting for that 2500 post marker.... or hoping that one day I'll log on and see a Pic of the Day post from Zippy. I think I'm getting better myself, but nowhere near his level yet.

I think its a combo of all the banning back in the day (twi, tuvi, etc...), everyone getting older having kids and less time for here, and back in the day when there was a big keep everything PG crackdown.

and GA forums failed to attract the younger crowd to keep the place going...

I think the ban hammer that was wielded stemmed from our outlook on life after 9/11 and the election of Bush and then Obama. I think the political forum was a good forum to vent and discuss but then I think the personal attacks ultimately led the departure of not only active posting but also to lurking. It just wasn't worth it anymore.

Cyclical. Less content, less reasons to read.

    Rinse, repeat.

The censorship didn't help in any way.

Looking back though, it seems to be a pretty common cycle that communities go through. The odd thing about Got|Apex? is that I still come back here, if infrequently. But it's the same across the web (e.g. MySpace).

I always forget G|A exists anymore. Only came back today on a whim because I ran out of other internets to visit!

    Honestly, I've never left...

But yeah, some folks did just "give up" because they were tired of the constant bickering between certain people. For awhile, it just seemed that some folks were just coming here to start flame wars and ultimately when there was nobody left to flame, they flamed out as well.

But I do agree that less and less younger newcomers stopped coming here as the general veterans starting growing older.

    oh...i almost forgot....the deals

The deals page I only visit when someone says they want a cheap PC, as I know G|A has the dell deals up top.

But I generally visit fatwallet at least twice a day.

it's the same on other forums i visit -there all fading .im not sure why but its like ten for ten. there all slowing and maybe in part do to places like facebook. but also do to people having less time to spend on there home computers. but also maybe due to cell phones and there carriers offering more for less in fees.
i know on computer geeker forums all across the net .they are much slower now adays then just 2-3 years ago.

Too many "kids" hang out on most of the computer forums... and they take bickering to a whole new level (full of cyberspeak and images to put each other down.)

Sigh... for missin' the "good ol' days".

I'll have to admit I don't come on as often any more, and when I do I mainly lurk, but it's kinda neat to log on every once in a while and see that some of you old regulars are still posting.

Thems were good times, back in the day.

agreed. i got tired of the deals page, as it just advertised a bunch of dell stuff before anything else. it was harder to recognize what was a good deal, and what wasn't with the got apex deal layout.

i end up going to slickdeals and fatwallet and ... passwird for deal searching.

for me it was a combination of factors...

i mainly was attracted to G|A because at the time, I was a poor college student and discovered the deals page. From there i discovered the forums, which for me (at the time) i found much more mature that other forums. I felt that the topics had depth, and the active users had substance.

one of the reasons i stopped coming was because i had to remove myself from G|A because it got to the point that i was buying things i couldn't afford (again, college student) just for the sake of it being on sale. i also had somewhat of a personal (yet silly) online dispute with someone...that in combination to several vocal, outspoken, and actively posting members whom i was fond of being banned led me to just slowly stop coming by.

i've tried every once in awhile to comeback, and i see the same people posting...this thread brought back memories though...

thank you everybody! *tear in eye*

Well I come to G|A if I want good advice on a variety of topics without being flamed on niche sites that might ignore the newbie.

I quit coming because I didn't have as much time to devote to browsing the forums...so in a day's time so much had gone on that I couldn't keep up with conversations (they'd go from 1 page to 7 in a day). So I just quit coming...

I ended up working at a few other forums as an administrator which ate up most of my time. 3 kids....full time job...but one day I found my way back here and saw that most everyone else had left as well.

Kind of disheartening because I did enjoy the conversations and fun we had here.

Psst...also, we getting any 10 year Galga badges? And hows that order of G|A t-shirts coming along?

i forget how i got here. i know freelance and cornmonkey and other IRL and forget who got here first. but the deals were good and i was a poor college student. don't know how many good deals there are now as there were back then (last 90s, early 2000).

i guess facebook took over and stuff. stuff meaning life. there were definitely good times on the board, that's for sure! glad to come back every now and then and see what's going on and give my input.

and i'm with MCS about being able to get some helpful advice from you folks that are always so friendly and willing to help!

I can't believe that I joined over 10 1/2 years ago. I found out about got|apex from someone at work. I still usually visit the site daily, but not nearly as much as I did in the past. I can remember coming back from vacation (no internet access) and finding hundreds of posts. That time is over and won't happen again.

One of the first deals I remember getting was the Creative Nomad MP3 player free if you downloaded some mp3s at some website. I've gotten various other deals throughout the years, sometimes buying things I didn't really need, but I enjoyed.

I never got into arguing with people online, because there's no point in it. Some people takes things too seriously, and others have no sense of humor.

As for some of the bannings, maybe timeouts would've been better. They were judgment calls that were made by the people running this site, and they make the rules here. There is no freedom of speech here, the rules are variable and can change from time to time.

One person nobody mentioned yet was dopey. Interesting that he doesn't show up in a member search. People that created accounts for SPAM purposes are still listed. Most of them have the same join and last visit date.

Dopey's account was probably lost during the "Taliban" incident when the top 5 posters of G|A at the time had their accounts virtually wiped. Since Dopey was already banned at the time, I guess the admins didn't bother with re-creating that account.

Only those who WANTED to grow out of it...did.

Choice is a wonderful thing. Plus, they are all welcome to come back if they want to... but in the end each has to make their own choices about that.
