Just curious...
If your employer said I'll pay you what you make now, but you only need to come in for as long as there is work for you to do, how much of your 8 hour day would you actually need?

Lol. "8 hour day". I honestly don't have much downtime at work. I work solid 10-11 hour days and weekends frequently. I even brownbag it and work at my desk during lunch. You?
Im here from 8-5 (9 hr days), on call 24/7, eat at my desk, but I routinely have about 3 hours where i just surf. Im in IT though, so I see it more as a job like a fireman. You're there in case something goes wrong, and to try to keep things running smooth enough so they dont.
I posed this question, because of an article I saw about it, and the fact that I got so bored yesterday I asked anyone in my Dept if they needed help with stuff, and my boss couldnt really give me anything of consequence to do.
This 3 hours isnt constant though...it varies throughout the year depending on what upgrades we are doing.

8 hours. There's always plenty of work to do.
I'm accountable for the administration, support, monitoring and design of 5 main functions broken up into 37 more specific technologies. (My junior administrator quit a month ago.) Aside from that, I'm on call for the business 24-7, though it's understood there will be some times where I don't respond within the hour.
The only reason I don't always work 12-15 hour days is because I'm burnt out.
If you find yourself working less than 8 full hours a day, with 10% unemployment, I would encourage you to find things to do at your office.

i think i work less than all of you guys...
i travel some and work substantially more when out of town but i could easily get away with 6 hours per day. Not only that but it would a substantial incentive to work more effectively so i could go home "on time."
i used to work a lot more over a year ago but things have slowed down substantially this year that and the firm has hired a bunch of noobs...

Wouldn't apply to me at all being a general contractor. i get payed all different ways. It depends on the job. by the hour ,by the day ,or by the complete job. and every now and then by a service contract on call if needed.
You could pick up Lindsay Lohan for less than a intel 990x, and still have money left over to bail her outta jail
depends. june-september i'd be closer to 12 hour days 6 days a week. now? an hour.

Each religion has got their own way of making you feel like a victim. The Christians say 'you are a sinner', and you better just zip up your trousers and give the money to the pope and we'll give you a room up in the hotel in the sky.

I would argue I'm not suggesting doing work for work's sake.Originally Posted by cruelpupet
