So like DF Im a sprint Premiere customer and get a new phone every 12mo. But I never use that offer, I have a Palm Pre and love it. Id like to get the Pre2 but it seems its not coming to Sprint.
Having been a mini tablet user in the past (Nokia N800) I thought the EVO might be a fun toy to get my feet wet with Andriod (just incase I have to jump ship from my beloved WebOS)
So should I got with the EVO? teh Epic? Both are $150...or I can get a Samsung Transform for $50

I love my EVO... but honestly it is a battery hog.
If it weren't for my Otterbox case, I would go and get an extended battery for it.
Power use is off the charts, but then again, this is a very powerful device. I find myself using it constantly (hence my battery issues.)

Would you find that to be an issue with the cellular radio turned off? I wouldnt be using ti as a phone

Is the extended battery that much thicker that you would need a different case?
I've been looking at the EVO, but there's no 4G here yet. I was told by two different salespeople that it may come here in February or March. I found a site online that said February, so maybe it will be here. I don't want to pay extra money for features I can't use.
I've been with Sprint since 1998 and only had four phones, so I don't change phones very often. I still have a Motorola Razr V3m and just bought two batteries of Ebay for less than $6.
If we get 4G, I'll probably get a new phone, then get a family plan to save a little money.
Yup.. it is. You would need a case that has a hole in the back to accomodate the extended battery. Unfortunately the Otterbox doesn't have this provision.
Honestly, I just like the ease of accessing my e-mail, internet, and common apps on the Evo... regardless of power usage.

I also am an Evo user. I have an extended battery I got off eBay for 10 bucks. It came with a new back for the phone and actually works fine. It is WAY thicker, though. Because of that, I still use the regular battery and just charge it every night.
I do like the Evo. I've had some bad luck with it (lost it once, replaced it one due to a restarting issue) so I'm on my third one, but I don't have any major gripes. That being said, I think it's a TERRIBLE time to buy a new phone. With dual core phones and God knows what else hitting the market, I definitely think it would be worthwhile to wait a few months to check out some of this new stuff. Just my 2 cents.
Since I actually rarely use my phone as a phone (minus texting) I'm thinking about switching to Virgin Mobile for a while. I mean, 25 bucks a month...that's a steal.
EDIT: in regards to your question, cruelpuppet, I almost always leave the cellular radio turned off. I have a widget set to turn it on and off for convenience. Before I started doing this, my battery would last just under a day. Now it's about a day and a half, depending on your signal strength. I was living north of the city for a while and got AMAZING reception. I could leave 3G on and still got a full 2 days.

I would agree, but since my plan is to not use this as a phone, Id want to be able to get a discount or close to getting it when a new palm hits sprint...ETA is July according to rumor
So are you talking about completely turning off the cellular radio or is there an option to turn off 4G? I was talking about turning it completely off. No 3G no 4G no bluetooth no nothing...just wifi. I figure it should last at least 2-3 days

Yes, I am talking about 3g and 4g being off. I practically never use 4g. I stick to WiFi or 3g. Markel says you're in NYC, which means you would probably get a fantastic signal, which would make your battery last much longer. I have widgets on my phone that control everything from WiFi to 4g so I can easily control how much battery I am using. My sister has the epic 4g, and she can't create widgets to control the 3g radio, which sucks in my opinion. Ironically, she got that phone because she wanted a keypad but loves swype so much that she never uses it.
In other news, I successfully replaced my cracked screen. I was running up some concrete steps with it in my hand, tripped, and did some damage. Although I have insurance, they have a one hundred dollar deductible, so I got a 35 dollar replacement off eBay. It was certainly a learning experience. When I put it all back together it seemed to work fine. Later I went to use the camera and everything was pink. I found that if I bent/twisted the phone the camera would work fine, which indicated a bad connection. I took it apart again and this time the camera didn't work at all. Took it apart again and then the whole screen didn't work. Took it apart again! I got the screen back but still no camera. In frustration I flicked the camera a few times and now it works! Those old school methods are always the best!

Glad to hear good things about the Evo. I, too, am a WebOS (pre) user, and while it's been a great phone, the battery life isn't great, and recently it's been running REALLY slowly, necessitating resets 2-3 times/week. I've considered defecting to the iPhone, but I like the hotspot option for the Evo (something the pre was rumored to do before it's release, but then Sprint locked it from even being tethered to another device for a data port.)

There are ways around that, and I believe new software was released to make it even easier.
I did it to my Treo 600 and used it 3-5 times, never bothered to do ti with the pre.
As for the EVO, I think Im going to opt for the EVO Shift. Its not as large of a screen as the EVO, but its processor seems to be significantly better at graphics.
Also Im starting to think I might use it as a phone too and ditch the Pre. Either way I have a refub Pre coming my way first. And maybe in the next few weeks HTC will announce an EVO 2

I haven't been keeping up with the buzz as much as I usually do, but that would be awfully quick for an Evo2. The last one was released in June. I also am pretty sure the Evo Shift has a slower CPU than the regular Evo.
If you root the phone, you get free tethering.
I know its almost a year old from posts ive read on android forums.
the shift is an 8000mhz proc, but a newer series of proc, so it performs better (much better for graphics)

I was at the Sprint store today and I played with the Evo Shift a little bit. I wasn't a big fan. It didn't seem nearly as snappy. I actually switched to Virgin Mobile today. (I know...) I wanted to save some money, and 25 bucks a month is a heck of a lot less than I was paying before. The games don't run nearly as well as they did on my Evo, but when I stopped to think about it, I buy a computer for games, not a phone.
