    Future TV options?

    So my 32" died and im back to my 26". I can probably fix the 32" myself, Im thinking its just a blown capacitor, but here's the question.

    OLED should be out in a year or so, which is far superior to our current LCDs (blacks are blacker, colors more vibrent, better viewing angles, brighter, ect.)

    What other things should I possibly wait for other than the two I know I dont care about (internet connected & 3D)?

    Is there a planned resolution jump higher than 1080p? New connectors besides possibly display port and HDMI mini?
    Am I alone here? Is that it?

    I'm going for LED. The price of OLED I imagine would still be very high while LCDs are getting cheaper and LEDS are following. 3D IMHO is going to be a no go as long as you need glasses to watch it.

    I have a 40" Sony Bravia LCD and it's fine. The PIP is my only gripe. I'm looking for either a 46" or a 32" for my next purchase.

    i have to agree here !
    i just got the panasonic 42 inch LCD and what they want for oled is crazy right now. but LED were like that 2 years ago to. also 3D tv right now is a waste in my eyes .the limits on what avail and how you have to buy 3D glass from that maker becouse the glasses from lets say sanyo wont work on a samsung tv sucks at $75 a pair. and tom has a sansung tv and he come to your place to see the movie. you need to have glasses for him to and don't forget his girl friend and your to .I understand they are going to make a tv soon that you wont need glass for but its a way off yet.

    OOhh..I forgot about PIP...thats something to keep in mind.

    There arent any OLEDs yet as far as im aware...i think the largest production one is currently 15".

    And 3D will always be a waste.

    i think i've reached the point w/my 50" plasma and bluray that it's gonna have to be a major improvement for me to even consider getting something new. yeah, the LED sets are pretty sweet but there's never a time when i'm watching tv that i think, this would be better if...

    i'll gladly get something newer when mine breaks down but i can't imagine there will be anything in the near future like the increase from rear-projection to Plasma/LCD or dvd to bluray.

    Well, it looks like I just got my answer.

    James Camron is looking to improve 3D on his sequels to Avatar by upping the frame rate to 48fps or 60fps and doubling or tripling resolution.

    Sadly, there are still no OLED displays available for purchase.

    you might also check out different codec capabilities for streaming directly to your TV

    1080p still isn't broadcast widely, so you're good for a while there

    PIP could be possible depending on the number of tuners your DVR has. so don't rule that out
    say "hi" to lumbergh for me

    Well time to dig up last years thread.

    CES is here, and from a quick article I glanced at about LG's showing there

    - they upped the size of their largest tvs
    - they have a 55" OLED
    - 3D is getting better (dont need active glasses)
    - resolution is going up (they are now offering somethign higher than 1080 i forgot the size)
    - Some of their models offer 4mm bezels
    Am I alone here? Is that it?

    PIP is still a sore point on my 40" Sony. It's side by side picture with OTA on the right side and everything else on the left side, then a whole lot of black bar spaces on the tops and bottoms of each picture. Make sure it's a small picture on top of a big picture located in the corners.

    Resolution looks to be trending up to a new "4K" designation - 4000 x 2000, or more specifically, 3840 x 2160.

    edit: Looks like Sharp has shown off their "8K" HDTV at CES. Geez... 7680 x 4320 resolution...

    Which sucks because i was looking to get a tv I could hold on to for at least 5 years in the next month or two. I was even thinking of getting a blueray player for BBC series like planet earth, human planet, etc.

    Not to mention, once you get past 1080p resolutions, you get a sort of diminishing returns as far as how good it looks. While the 4k and 8k TV's do look nicer they are THAT much nicer. I think any decent TV you buy today will still be good enough 5 years from now.

    Oh I know its a diminishing return, and in reality I dont think I'll see a difference between 720 and 1080 as I prefer not not wear my glasses when watching tv/movies.

    Really the feature i need to wait for is a somewhat affordable 42-47" OLED TV for the better color output.

    not only that, how many sources are going to output 4k-8k? will cable broadcast that high and suck up more bandwidth? Would bluray's actually be able to contain a full movie in 4k let alone 8k?

    My PC can probably do that currently, and if not a cheap video card upgrade can. But that's besides the point, it'll be a bit before stuff is sourced in that resolution.

    I replaced my fuzzy CRT in my bedroom with a Westinghouse 40" 1080p 120Hz LED for $400 at Costco. I like the thin bezel. It makes the tv seem bigger than my 40" Sony. OTA signal is great but they put the antenna/coax connection at this weird depth that rabbit ears with transformer at the end doesn't fit. So I'm adding ease of input cables as another thing to look for. This TV doesn't have a wake up timer or PIP which I wish it did.

    Still holding out for a good deal on a new tv. I have a 27" symphonic (walmart) tube type TV my wife got on black Friday 1997 has 2 sets of RCA input jacks. and a 19" tube type Magnavox i think i got in 1993 or 1994 it does not even have a RCA connector.
