SS: I'd give my right eye...

    Here's the sequence of events:

Saturday, April 23 - empty a "can" (the cardboard ones) of coffee and put the plastic lid back on it. I then decide to flatten it out to save some room in the trash can. The lid "pops" off and hits me on the right eyelid. It hurt a little (I put some cold on it briefly because I thought I might get a black eye) and forgot about it.

Sunday, April 24 - in the afternoon I notice that when I look at the sky with my right eye that it looks like there is a swarm of insects.

Monday, April 25 - spots are still there, so I go to see the eye doctor in the afternoon. He tells me I have a torn retina and sends me to their main office (about 25 minutes away) to see the retina specialist. Retina specialist (who will be my regular doctor for this) says I have a torn and partially detached retina and tells me to come in tomorrow morning for "surgery".

Tuesday, April 26 - I get the laser "surgery" ("spot welding" around the tear) and go on to work. Everything went fine.

Saturday, April 30 - I'm out running some errands when I notice the vision in my right eye getting suddenly worse. Call the eye doctor's office (closed) and leave message with answering service. Get a call back from the "doctor on call" and he tells me to come in. He dilates the eye and tells me I had a hemorrhage and to come see the regular doctor first thing Monday morning. Vision in right eye is completely blurred (a bit of peripheral vision, but can't see my hand in front of my face).

Monday, May 2 - go in to see doctor. He dilates the eye but blood prevents him from seeing inside. He does an ultrasound and says everything appears ok on the retina, so says to wait a week to see if blood clears.

Monday, May 9 - back to see the doctor. Vision in eye hasn't cleared very much, so he advises surgery tomorrow to clear it out. I'll be having a vitrectomy - doctor removes the blood (in vitreous humor) and replaces it with some other fluid (that the body will eventually replace). He says that it's almost 100% that I'll end up with a subsequent cataract (may take a few years). He told my I'd probably want to take the rest of the week off work.

There's some videos on youtube of some vitrectomies - kinda gross to see them punching "ports" in the eye for the tools to get in, but at least they are pretty thin. Hopefully once the blood is cleared out there won't be anything else wrong in the back of the eye.

Eek, sorry to hear of your bad luck Markel. I hope the surgery clears up your vision.

Well, I just got back from a follow-up with the eye doctor. He said things went very well and look good (considering). He did some additional retina repair (laser "welding") while he was inside the eye which necessitated putting a large bubble of gas in the eye (helps the retina heal). I remember being briefly awake during the surgery (they use a twilight anesthetic) and hearing him ask for the laser and noticed some flashing in my eye. Because of the bubble, they wanted me either face down or on my left side as much as possible. Now I only need to sleep on my left side but can be "upright" otherwise. The bubble in the eye makes an interesting "view" with the line of the bubble across the middle of my vision. There has been some (expected) additional bleeding after the surgery, but that should clear up over time, as should the bubble. But for now I'm still seeing out of my left eye only. Back to the doctor in 2 weeks for the next visit.

Well, it was a Trader Joe's coffee can....

A bit of a setback today. This morning I saw a very dark patch at the edge of my field of view. I shook my head a bit and the patch moved into some streaks that I could tell were blood. My regular doctor wasn't available, but I saw a different retina specialist (another ultrasound of the eye because of the blood clouding the fluid). His suspicion is that the original tear may be bleeding further. I'll see my regular doctor Monday morning.

Well, on Sunday morning and this morning I had a repeat of what happened on Friday morning. I saw my regular eye doctor today and he thinks things are clearing up, and that the blood is settling in the eye as I sleep then mixing back as I start moving around. So things seem to be going ok.

So weird to think your eye is bleeding like that.

Hope it's getting better by the day.

I hope it heals up quick. Talk like a Pirate Day isn't for several months but you'll be in time for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

Things are definitely becoming clearer in the eye. There's still some "fuzz" in the vision, but I can make out objects, etc. Hopefully I'll be able to wear a contact lens in it before too long (I'll be asking the Dr. about this at my next appointment a week from Thursday).

Just to update after my visit to the doctor yesterday. He said that things are looking very good on the retina, and that probably 98% of the blood has cleared from the eye. But the remaining 2% still makes the vision distorted -- I can see much better in that eye now, but not well enough to (for example) read the regular print on the computer screen.

Well, hopefully getting to the end of this story. As the retina doctor promised (due to the vitrectomy) a cataract developed in my right eye. I'd say it started developing immediately, as that eye has needed stronger and stronger correction -- I went from -5.25 diopters up to -8.5 (as of my last contact fitting 6 months ago) and that correction was really only good for about 3 months (so I'm sure that I was over -9.0). I had a 1-year followup with the retina specialist last October and he said that the reason for the constantly increasing correction is due to the cataract forming (not clouding the vision, but just making it worse). So today I had cataract surgery and now have a new implanted lens which hopefully will free me from other corrections for that eye (other than reading glasses).

They super dilate the eye for the surgery and said it could last 2 to 3 days, so the vision is not very clear at this time. But hopefully in a few days I'll be seeing clearly.

what an ordeal... glad it's coming to an end

sidenote: i was at a basketball game and a player got scratched in the eye by another player (cut your damn fingernails!!), and i was surprised at how much his eyeball bled... wow... i saw him put a towel to it and thought for sure he'd got scratched above his eye, but it was the white of his eye bleeding

Had a followup appointment with the surgeon today. My vision checked at 20/30 (which is legal for driving, which is good because I drove there ). He said everything looks good and the vision should only get better. I can tell tonight that it is better than this morning. Almost makes me wish they would find an excuse to do the other eye so I can be completely done with contacts.

Actually, I wasn't stomping on the empty can - I was just squeezing it with my hands.

Since that happened, I've tried doing the same thing with every can I empty. On most of them the air just leaks out around the lid, but I've had a few of them go "pop". (Of course, I keep the can pointed away from me now.)

markel -hope all is going much better for you .i missed this whole thead till today .
I understand your concerns and have to relate in a way. I had eye surgery as a kid and have to see a specialist every 2 year or so. I see OK with glasses but know I can never wear contacts. lasik surgery is not a option as a child i had to wear a eye patch and funny 2 color glasses for a while kind of like the old 3D glasses they give you at the movies .also 3d movies are a waste for me as most the time im not seeing the affects.
