Thread: Cable or DSL

  1. #1
I know this is now an age old question, but I still can't decide which way to go...

btw does anyone know if the cable company will tell you how many cable modem subscribers are sharing the line with you?
I mean if there were like a gazillion (mild exaggeration) people sharing it, then what's the point??

any input would be appreciated... thanks...

Thanks Jeffbx, it was informative... but it still doesn't help me decide which way to go...

Would those of you in SoCal who are either DSL or Cable subcribers gimme some input as to your level of satisfaction with your service??

    Thanks

It's really going to depend on your local neighborhood. If you're lucky enoough to live in a place where there's not a lot of Internet use (bunch of older people, for instance) then go with cable - you'll get a faster connection.

If your neighboorhood is saturated with users, go with DSL.

If you're not sure, I'd go with DSL. The speed may not be as high, but then you don't have to worry about slowdowns during peak hours (5-11pm, usually), especially if use ramps up in your area.

I have a friend who has cable in a fairly dead neighboorhood, and he can get a 6-8Mbps connection to some sites. I have another friend in a hip, popular part of town whose cable connection slows to about the speed of a 28.8 modem every afternoon. DSL in both neighborhoods is a constant 768Kbps.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Jeffbx!!

Lemme call my cable company and see if they tell me around how many subscribers are sharing my line....

they might not be willing to tell you that information, the best thing to do is to go find someone in your neighborhood with cable and ask them how the connection is.

the closer the neighbor the more likely that you'll get an accurate result

I'm in SoCal, Santa Barbara to be exact. I had DSL 384 up 384 down for about 2 years. GTE absolutely raped me at $90 a month! When Cable was available in my area I made the switch since it was only $29.99 and I have been waaaaaay more satisfied with it. Instead of 30-40 kbps download I'm now getting between 200 and 300. So in my case it's well worth it, cable is the way to go. However, like most have said, it does depend on your neighborhood. Fortunately I live in an old neighborhood with a lot of old people who most likely don't even own computers! Fast internet connection, slow drivers! LOL

cable's great for speead and price. but what i like about DSL is the fact that my service is pretty liberal. I'm with Speakeasy Inc (www.speakeasy.net). They actually *encourage* folks to run their own servers. Plus you get the statics IPs, which is always nice.

The speed is definitely a big draw for the cable services. But they can't be as free with what they let you do as a smaller DSL provider could..

The answer is easy. Get whatever is cheapest.

Cable usually costs more, but is much easier to get hooked up.
DSL sucks to get installed. Give yourself at least a month, probably two, after making the call to actually get service. Be patient, or else you'll tear your hair out.

How long does it usually take to get a cable modem activated?

This dial-up thing is really getting on my nerves.

It's pretty quick to get a cable modem installed. You make an appointment for the cable guy to come out and you are up and running that day. with DSL, you call the phone company, they send a software package 10-14 days later, then in 7-10 days the DSL is active.

I would go for Cable, i have it and i absolutely love it the speed is fast and downloading is awsome, but the only drawback is the 4-9pm period when every one is on and then it slows down to about 40k a sec.

Well of course I am sure you have surmised this comteplation of information form the replies sent in already that Cable modems are good, very good but the only dowfall to their complexity is that they are so complex now they all connect to the same local area of where you live thus giving you a neighborhood and other things wthat inadvertantly lead to slower downloads althrought on the up side you could live in a less dense area of Cable modem owners thus replenishing your hopes of getting blazing speed now dont get me wrong no matter where you live you will get good download and upload speed with the capabilities of 1.5 Mb of throughput but you could aslo look at the interesting advantages of DSL now DSL I have to say is nice but I would much rather preffer Cable first with DSL some companies make you pay more for continual access if you dont they will kick you off every hour and then they lay off is only for 5 min so it drives you mad making you want to pay for that 5 dollars extra or you can go here http://www.freedsl.com and check out their info they might be able to hook you up also DSL comes in a variety of packiages such as DSL ADSL and other various connectivity but ass they add more letters take the letter they add on and add that to the dollar sign and wallah! you got more money to deal with. You can however get a program offline from any site that might have it that will "tweak" your download/upload time and increase happiness alltogether now I am not geranteeing that this process will work but it increases the amount of packets being downloaded such as in Q3 with their commands the more packets of infromtation the more downloaded now this might also decrease your download/upload capabilites if you do it wrong or it might do it because of your modem whatever the case is you are alwauys taking risks in this type of stuff so even iff you cant get over 200k a sec that isnt bad at all my top is 315 k a sec but i never get 1.5Mb/s you would have to live in the country oh...yeah I wouldnt go around sabotaging other people's cable modems in your neighborhood because that would be bad it would increase your internet experience but you would go to Jail becasue i said so....now back to tweaking when you tweak it gives you more information downloaded and increases enjoyability and add peanut butter take away the peanuts add bread and your set!

I've done a number of installs for friends of mine. I live in Orange County in SoCal, it seems that Cox Cable is quite reliable, cheap, and quick to install. The issues with "sharing" the pipe are present but not overwhelming. The connections peak durng the wee hours of the morning and 4-5 Mbps but during the busy evening periods drop to 1.5Mbps or so. Still faster than DSL. But telco are much better if you want to run a server of any type of services that the cable companies ban. Also, they don't have weird policies against routers or anything of the sort.

For those of us who use our computers more than 5 hours a week, stop wasting your time on dial-up! EVen if you arent a big web surfer, dsl speeds up file downloads and makes it easier to look something up when working. The additional cost is more worthwhile than upgrading your machine.
